Swords, Sorcery, And Then Some!
Howdy, New Readers! Thanks for reading Exiern!
Written by Scott T. Hicken with art by Antipus, the comic updates Mondays. Please check out the Archive to enjoy the earlier adventures of Typh and Peonie!
Exiern contains mature themes and is best for readers 18+.
I was hoping for more on the Alicia storyline, but oh well, the bodyguards are always fun.
I doubt it’s a good idea for Typh to get drunk. Even when Urtica gets the incriminating documents, Cardinal D!!!!!!d’s goons probably aren’t going to come quietly when arrested, and Typh might be needed to bust some heads.
I was hoping Alicia and Typh would get to bond over the fun of beating up Coriander, but turns out Alicia’s got another agenda besides finding Denver, so she’s probably not gonna help out there. Shame.
At one point, Tiff discovered that her new body is a cheap drunk – looped on only one or two drinks.
This sequence of pages is an interesting ramble through … not “introspection”, really, since much of what Tiff is learning/processing is being presented to her from outside, but enlightenment, maybe? … as she begins to come more to grips with her fate.
@Guesticus: That seems likely since that bit has been brought up in years and Typhan-Knee has been seen drinking regular ale since then. Or at least what looked like regular ale.
If I am remembering correctly, without running back through months and years of episodes, when Tiff, Peonie and one of the Suits went North (and seems like there was a 4th maybe Denver) that there was at least one time he took off his helmet. I also seem to remember him recalling his younger days? IIRC he looked fairly normal, with blonde hair.
Not gonna lie, I’m interested because both Drow and I had somewhat different ideas as to exactly how these two were changed, and I’m curious to see how Scott tackles it.
Yeah, we saw (but only from behind)!one of the pair remove the helm during the Northern Adventure. Just prior to that adventure, while the Tiffany was gradually becoming more girly and—based on her own prejudices—weaker, one of the Nils/Bohr pair was enchanted and fighting Urtica’s soldiers, when the super soldier was finally taken down by the half-naked captain, we got a close look at the helm in profile. Within the helm, the man’s facial silhouette was fairly clear: he had a beaky, downward pointing, hook of a nose. Not exactly what I was expecting but it was certainly a human proboscis.
@50srefuge Not exactly, the guards are still themselves. Which is is probably the what Typhan-Knee is suppose to remember here, it’s what’s on the inside that counts.
This scene of camaraderie shows to me the Neils and Bohr are cultured and respectful. Remember in the past they have played games with each other similar to 20 questions, I THINK I remember one time they were playing chess with the gameboard only in their minds. Here they show that one of them at least is a home brewer, and while they are avoided by the regular troops, they themselves don’t mind having the “Barbarian” enjoy their company. Even to correctly pronouncing Typhan Knee’s name.
They are more complex that many would believe. And I like this “Behind the Curtain’ view of them.
Jonathan Wint: well, ’tis but a scratch (and what else is he going to do with it? don’t believe they have a panel beater to remove it 😛 ) It is nice that he has kept it, makes it easier to tell them apart now (if only could remember names 🙁 )
Historically, water was not safe to drink, so in Europe they brewed beer. The beer that they brewed was typically not very alcoholic – just enough to keep the water clean. It was called ‘small beer’ and might only be 1% alcohol. So drinking beer before the ceremony would be utterly normal.
50srefugee: they are in the armoury, would be horrified if there wasn’t a suit in the process of being made, but no, that is not for Typh (also, the perspective is messed up, Typh looks bigger than both Suits in panel two)

I do like seeing Typhan-Knee bonding with the guards and they are respectful enough to use the proper pronunciation of Typh’s name.
I’m suddenly incredibly curious about what exactly these guys are that they have inhuman amounts of alcohol tolerance.
I’m not sure Tiff CAN get drunk anymore. Her current body doesn’t like alcohol.
And who exactly “processed” Nils and Bohr?
@Mogster: Typhan-Knee can drink alcohol and he has taken alcohol since the transformation.
It also depends on what type of alcohol.
i am starting to wonder if these guys are not built on the same principal as warhammer 40k space marines
I hope we actually find something out on the next page.

Yeah, the poor suits of animated armour, only wanted when they are needed to deal with rampaging BBQ food
It’s possible that the reason Tiff couldn’t handle alcohol because that is how she believed female bodies reacted to alcohol
I betting on Flesh Golems or Death knights..

Hasn’t been brought up in years is what i meant.
My question is: with those helmets, in that design, how do those guys get those drinks, from those mugs, into themselves?
I see no indication of a straw nor any sign, in the past at least, of teleportation occurring, so… how?
@ Frith Ra: It’s magic 😉

Same way their eye-slits change to indicate expression.
Same way they discharge the usual results of beer consumption, only in reverse, and in a different spot.

And Tiff is yet again confronted with someone who has been transformed, and had to adapt in unexpected ways.
Not gonna lie, I’m interested because both Drow and I had somewhat different ideas as to exactly how these two were changed, and I’m curious to see how Scott tackles it.
@Sheila we only saw the back of his head.

Also, for those worried about how they drink, the visible side profile also showed that the man’s lips are above the edge of his gorget.

Even if they can’t remove their helmets (and my memory agrees that they can) that is what straws are for…

I notice Neils kept the scratch.

I like how they treat Typhan-Knee as an equal. It’s interesting.
I see they are fabricating a new suit of armour. I’m no judge of such things, but it looks smaller than what they have on.
I wonder if it’s meant for Typh?
If Neils and Bohr want someone else to hang out with and swap stories, I would suggest Alphonse Elric from Full Metal Alchemist.
@Mark they also have a bowling team.

Yup, I remember that. They invited the king to join their team and he agreed.
