They will swap with each other on the 23rd of January (so the Exiern one will move to Dark Reflections and vice versa along with which one is safe(r) for work than the other – don’t worry, we’ll tag them) before the Valentine’s Day Sex Drive 2019 images go up on the 14th of February until the end of March (both will definitely be NSFW!).

Anyway, these are a couple of images from the extensive vaults of Exiern history and both commenting to some degree on the perpetual battle with trying to be creative and innovative … and maybe feeling that things aren’t always going as successfully as one might hope as seen through the onetime experiences of Exiern’s creator emeritus Drowemos.

We now have a confirmed date for the return of Exiern’s main story of Thursday, the 10th of January.

In the interim, we have this promo made especially for us from one of our many friends, the outstanding horror webcomic Melvina’s Therapy.

It’s especially apt to be recommending this webcomic just as it’s about to start its final ever season given that even though the bulk of Exiern is paid for by Scott’s invaluable efforts as it has been for years, in recent times, a not insignificant amount of Exiern including most of the last month (as well as some very exciting future projects we can’t wait to show you – basically, I help with acquiring what we hope you all find entertaining expansions that otherwise wouldn’t be possible) is funded by my job at a mental health unit.

Definite influences from the master of twisted horror Junji Ito as well as other Japanese sources (Rasen means ‘spiral’ in Japanese and is the name of the sequel to the book that launched The Ring upon the world. Obligatory American remake was actually decent).

Anyway, if you’re looking for something to occupy your time, experts agree that this is a fine choice and an excellent time to catch up if you’ve not encountered it before. I truly can say it’s the scariest webcomic I’ve come across to date.

This was from the section in their forums talking about potentially good webcomics by the way.

Exiern’s status is … complicated.

For those of you of where horror really isn’t your thing, there’s also a couple of our other friends, Unearth and The Lucent (formerly known as The Woken), also with decent sized archives to help occupy your time between now and our next page.

All three webcomics featured here today I first discovered thanks to advertisements their creators advertising on Top Webcomics and since I went on to sponsor them all on Patreon, maybe there’s actually something to this whole it pays to advertise thing? Well, I certainly hope so given we’re currently paying to run a Top Webcomics ad ourselves.

This page is completely by Marshall Reeves (Yesterday Bound) after Sean Harrington (Spying With Lana) thought Marshall had proved himself enough step up to tackling captions as well.

Also, please note new Top Webcomics Images for the New Year taken from the Exiern vault here and here but please note when there are NSFW tags as indicated.

About This Page

The chance of Exiern joining the Marvel Universe hasn’t become any more likely since the day it started as far as we know but to start with, we do have a page illustrated by Wayne Nichols, an artist who has worked for Marvel, Dark Horse, and IDW Publishing among others. You can see it by clicking either First on the navigation bar or clicking here.

This ends the current run of special pages from the last month. Thank you for your patience and the main story will be returning next week.

Now for some words about plans for the future but the one thing we most wanted to bring your attention to is the above.

About This Page

Even though Ash himself is clearly referenced many times in Exiern, the closest character we have to the long suffering hero of the Evil Dead series is Typh, long suffering hero on Exiern, who also somehow valiantly keeps on going despite everything that keeps on happening to them.

The clearest parallel to the Necronomicon, the evil book from the Evil Dead is the Book in Exiern (you know the one), whose ethics and conduct are at best … suspect.

Anyway, for once an evil book is being forced to be at least a bit useful as on top of pointing the way to a project we’ve been working on for a very long time, we did also want to let you know what at least some of the things planned for Exiern going forward. If something’s not mentioned now, it’s quite possible we didn’t know right now either!

2018 Year In Review

Well, I didn’t plan on saying anything more with this year’s Christmas Special than to say the one thing I’m the most not keen about with the latest Doctor Who is that in general, pants that stop short of at least your socks if not the shoes are too much of a questionable fashionable choice for my liking.

I was teetering on a lot of the rest of the outfit but that pushed me over. I also wanted to highlight another Classic Doctor Who character (and costume!). I definitely didn’t intend for it to blow up quite as much as it did and the direction it went but I should have known better, shouldn’t I? Especially after last year.

As for the show itself, I actually can’t comment as I didn’t watch it this year. I was planning to take a break after the previous Doctor as I’ve just been getting a bit worn out with television in general lately and then I learned who the new one was so I changed my mind … but by the time it came back, I’d changed my mind again and so to date, I haven’t seen this current season.

That’s a segue to say that I haven’t read any of Exiern from last year either. So, most of you reading this probably know a lot more than I do about what’s happening, I have almost no idea. I’ve heard there some big reveal about the nature of the curse not long after that literal cliffhanger I stopped at last year (but I have no idea what it is) and at some point since then, a boat is involved. I hear Exiern’s been quite good in 2018 … ? (Scott, feel free to weigh in anytime if you want!)

I really don’t know much more past that point in the story. I guess I find it funny that I’m helping getting so much behind the scenes but I have so little idea on recent developments. The big plan was to catch up after Valentine’s Day once I got the 2019 Valentine’s Day Special for the Valentine’s Day Sex Drive taken care off and saw the X-Men film Dark Phoenix which was also supposed to be released on February 14th before being moved to June 7th almost straight afterwards, so thanks for nothing to the Disney-Fox buyout which I’m sure is behind this.

What’s Coming Up for 2019

2019 is the year where we hope to get as many as possible of the behind the scenes issues sorted out so that everything’s running as smoothly as possible from 2020. At the most practical level, a least a new page every week and the quest to make it more than one page a week as soon as possible continues.

Issues in that department include everything from raising funds to the fact that regardless how much money is available, the artist can only work so fast. Hence the unavoidable interruptions along the way. The hope is to make that as much a thing of the past as quickly as possible as well as expand on the storytelling so that it’s not just the one story that’s focussed on, there’s a whole world (of Exiern) out there (and not just the one, too – starting with the seemingly eternal struggle to get and keep Dark Reflections on the air).

So, to sum all that up, we’ve been working on raising both money and increasing production of actual content and have made some headway in the years up to now and we hope to have that continue through 2019. Just one case in point, the very special new page this one is pointing towards as mentioned at the very beginning of the text on this page and we hope there’ll be a lot more events of a comparable magnitude at one end as well as just a dependably updating story that keeps you coming back as well as hopefully bringing in more readers at the other.

I hope everyone had a good holiday season and New Year’s Day, thank you to Scott for overseeing everything to do with Exiern as he has done for many years now (and long before I knew it even existed, let alone did anything more than read it) as well as a multitude of artists and others who also work on it.

See you here next week for the story’s return and hopefully I’ll be joining you in actually reading it again soon.

~ Shan.

Thank you again to Marshall Reeves from Yesterday Bound who has been working really hard for Exiern this holiday season (and he’s not done yet!) as well as Sean Harrington from Spying With Lana as Captioner and Dialogue Speech Balloon Inserter Supreme.

Special thanks to not just Sean but Electric Gecko of Puck and Colin Wells of Normal as well as Scott himself all answered the call in short order when there was a last minute Card Caption Crisis. All people who’ve done a lot for Exiern both in front of and behind the scenes for years now.

So, keeping with the theme of Holiday Special Continuity, we’ve got a follow up to last year’s Doctor Who themed Christmas Special and the fact we made it in time for Christmas (just) while Doctor Who for the first time since it came back in 2005 … is not. Instead, they’re doing New Year’s Day instead. Well, we’re doing New Year’s Day as well, so there! (and see you in a week!)

As for other details, as many Doctor Who references as I could comfortably fit into the top panel (notice anything about where they’ve landed?) and I’m definitely not projecting about the one thing I thought was a bridge too far and still can’t come to terms to about the new Doctor despite all my speeches from last year (see, all the 13th Doctor cosplayers get it! I mean doesn’t that one simple difference look so much better?).

Now as for the other panel … well … Frozen … snow … Christmas … any chance to dunk on Faden, how could we not?

Well, we have this year’s Halloween Special to thank for this week’s page, or more specifically its comments. Two “Who’s Phi?” and one “Who’s Phil?” and from the regulars at that. Kind of had us worried in the Long Form Narrative and Strategic Long Term Planning Department given he’s kind of a fundamental character from way back.

So, without further ado, another page in the spirit of the Chibi Chapter Summaries even if not actually one itself courtesy of the art of Marshall Reeves (Yesterday Bound, Neese) and the captioning of Sean Harrington (Spying With Lana, somewhat less but still a significant amount of Neese) plus the realisation of a character concept now used on this page as well and all possible thanks to the Bad Webcomics Wiki even if it’s not even remotely obvious how (one day all will be revealed) at the moment … meet pivotal character Captain Phi and obviously not a moment too soon (I believe he’s been becoming kind of increasingly important to the story lately …).

Meet Captain Phi Grund

Man of Honour

Man of Insight

Man of Action

And some truly impressive underwear.

Also, the modest hero.

Man of Integrity

And never one to complain (officially)

Lest we forget …

Totally the smoothest of smooth criminals.

There’s going to be a break from the main story until next month in order to give our artist a break as well as time to recharge the buffer. Please continue to the end of this announcement for further details.

It goes without saying that among other things, the business of webcomics is fickle at best and with a high rate of attrition at the best of times. No-one is immune as evidenced by the sudden disappearance of the very popular and much loved webcomic Bloomin’ Faeries. After over a year and some quite definitive statements on the matter, we put up our Halloween tribute contemplating the impermanent nature of the medium and the departure of a webcomic that had been very good to us. Then less than three weeks later, it came back.

Well, that was awkward. It’s also a much rarer occurrence than webcomics going in the other direction and suffice to say, I don’t think any of us saw that coming. In terms of our Halloween Special … as far as we know, we were protected by the Fair use doctrine in US copyright law but here we are being on the safe side on top of acknowledging our tribute page has been overtaken by events in less than a month.

Seriously, though it is great to see a webcomic come back from the seeming dead precisely because so many times it seems to go in the other direction. So, welcome back Bloomin’ Faeries!

OK, as for the upcoming update schedule, Exiern is returning to a Tuesday update schedule at least until after New Year’s Day. So, our next page will be on Tuesday, the 18th of December, followed by Christmas and New Year’s Day. As per usual (well, usual since 2017), there’ll be some specials for those holidays. The 18th of December isn’t part of the ongoing story either but instead is addressing … another problem our Halloween Special from this year very unexpectedly raised. See you here Tuesday next week to see what that is.

A Brief History of the Exiern Halloween Special

Originally, last year’s Exiern Halloween Special was intended to be an entry in the Top Webcomics Halloween competition of 2017 (we came fourth in their Valentine’s Day competition and only the Top Three got prizes, of course). Marshall Reeves (Yesterday Bound) and Sean Harrington (Spying With Lana) put in an impressive effort to complete our entry at short notice and it was up to with about a mere ten days to go before entries closed to simply just email it in. I even made a joke about how not to assume anything even at the final relatively simple step compared to making the art (Marshall) and captioning it all (Sean).

Long story short, there’s a reason why my online money transfer service through which we pay most of the artists got to see that page long before almost everyone else. I could blame the auto-fill on gmail throwing up multiple emails with the same starting word but let’s face it, I really screwed up the easiest job by far and noticed far too late. Yes, I’m even more obviously hopeless

However, it worked out. There wasn’t any repeat competitions this year and now, this page is in the archives and led to Halloween being a yearly event. This year’s entry came about from being inspired by this part of a comment during last year’s detour from the main plot:

“I’ve been reading Exiern for a long while now and the main reason I visit the site these days is to use the link to Blooming Faeries. I confess I am coming here because I’m too lazy to change my bookmarks.”

Image result for i'm not even mad

(something something Fair use)

Seriously, that is amazing. I loved it. It helps keep us grounded for starters. It’s also actually what made me look into Bloomin’ Faeries – which was made just that bit harder by the fact that when I did not long after seeing that, it was already gone from its site.

We’re also saying don’t worry about the upcoming filler. We did need to do 31 pages of side story last year followed by even more non-story pages to take us through the holiday season and into the new year but I’m also here to let you know not only do we not need to do something anywhere near that extent again in the foreseeable future, we’re increasingly close to pulling off some further enhancements to Exiern which we hope you’ll all be able to see soon and some of it very soon.

So, bear with us just that bit longer. We’ve been working at improving the various facets of Exiern for years now and we’re almost at the point of making another series of quite big steps up relatively soon, we hope.

Finally, see how all those seemingly disparate elements being raised above ultimately tied together in the end?
