Didn’t see that explanation coming. I thought it was going to be “because the sword is magic”, but turns out it’s because Olivia is magic.

Has ‘the Deep Logician’s formula’ or Olivia’s nature been mentioned before?

@Quentin, yes the formula has been mentioned before, as far as I can recall this is the first time it’s actually been mentioned what exactly it did to Olivia

Looks like someone planned ahead, and was EXPECTING the Coriander to take this exact course of action, knew about the North Wind and was expecting it to be used in the duel. I honestly don’t know why I am surprised…

Kind of explains why the sword turned. The logical fallacy in Olivia’s chest is playing havoc with the sword’s consistency.

Uhm okay, that explains That. But did the North Wind shrink as a result of the magic too… Because otherwise, the bit that’s missing is… Well… The Bit that’s Missing. As in the other end of North Wind which should at least be sticking out the back a Little considering how big it seems in the barbarian’s hands…

(sorry, brain glitched on the girl-guy’s name… Haven’t had any coffee yet… >>;;)

Ohkay I will not dwell on this, logic has failed me once again.

“Didn’t see that explanation coming. I thought it was going to be “because the sword is magic”, but turns out it’s because Olivia is magic.”

Except the “Sword never fails its wielder” enchantment had to take that into account to know it’s safe to plunge into her chest without violating its directive. So… yeah, partially the enchantment of Northwind too.

She is the first character I have heard of that actually has an attempted explanation for a trope used in about all anime.

Although, I also think this is the author employing another well known trope for the explanation.

…just as planned? I’m really tempted to say both she and the king planned for this to happen, but that would have required some EXTREME forethought

I’d say the explanation for why the sword isn’t sticking out anywhere is because right now, the sword simply… isn’t. Anything. Which is the fallacy.

Now I only have 4 more impossible things to think of before breakfast.

As long as the North Wind isn’t piercing that heart now instead of coming out of Olivia’s back…

@mhalpern: Except Northwind would have killed Olivia if it wasn’t for the fact that her heart is elsewhere.

    Well that’s an interesting development.

    February 16, 2016, 6:45 pm | # | Reply

So she got a dimensional bag where her heart should be? Leave it to Northwind to find that one spot precisely.

@Jake: That fact might have been included in the calculation.
Personally I doubt a higher plan, just a set of lucky coincidences.

So Northwind managed to not pierce any lung or sever any arteries around the heart. Sounds like it’s working just fine. Just the blood loss would be lethal in short order.

‘I know where Olivia’s heart lies.” And presumably can feed it to a stray dog whenever she wants.

The Queen has EARNED her position. This… is truly a Queen worthy of her King.

I’m still hoping that the rest of the sword is sticking out of the Grand Huppy Duppy’s back.

    February 17, 2016, 1:13 pm | # | Reply

My only issue is that the initial sword strike the way it was drawn would not have pierced her heart in the first place. A totally survivable if severe wound (well given the context of having magic that heals around).

And on comparing the pages, the sword entry wound is even right where past-Olivia is clutching her chest after the Deep Logician was interrupted. Continuity well done indeed, if anatomy a tad bit off.

Awhile back a, not sketch, inked copy of that panel showed up and we were told the sword going into Olivia was an art mistake and it was supposed to be somewhere else.
