Swords, Sorcery, And Then Some!
Howdy, New Readers! Thanks for reading Exiern!
Written by Scott T. Hicken with art by Antipus, the comic updates Mondays. Please check out the Archive to enjoy the earlier adventures of Typh and Peonie!
Exiern contains mature themes and is best for readers 18+.
I just discovered Exiern last week. The initial few months were pretty badly edited, but the most recent team is doing a bang up job. Brilliant work. Just one thing I don’t get: what does “Exiern” mean? I’ve not seen it used anywhere within the story, and the “About” page doesn’t mention it either.
@Chaucer59 – Welcome! So glad to hear you’re enjoying the comic!
To be honest – I have no idea what “Exiern” means. Drowemos never shared that with me. I know the ORIGINAL original comics were called “The Land of Exiern” so my assumption is that it may just reference an overarching realm that perhaps those living inside of don’t have a term for – kind of like if our own Universe had a name we didn’t know about.
But that’s just my personal thoughts on the matter.
As Drowemos explained it to me, “Exiern” stands for “nExus InfERNal”, and this particular plane of existence is about as low as you can get without delving into the infernal planes.
Exiern is part of the greater ether, the material planes. The Travelers chose that layer of the realm because it was easily manipulated by their power and farthest away from the higher planes where the Authorities resided.
Not bad. She may want to consider learning to use a spear. A well trained spearman can hold off a considerable amount of swordsmen for a long time. The spear may be much lighter than a sword and if it is broken, you now have two weapons.
I own one.. I used it fooling around.. I hit a brick.. The damage was like I used a gun… A Very BIG GUN!
I found out later used right (or by me lucking out) the tip of the whip can be traveling at about twice the speed of sound.
The Tips about 4 ounces of Temped STEEL…
I rather be stabbed.
Stopped fooling Around with it..
Its light, small, easy to hide.
And has been used in every culture on our Earth.
It was the Weapon Samurai used if they had to fight in a no holds bar fight with a better swords master. They called it the Honor Weapon Kusari-fundo.
There all different but all scary..
Not to mention This IS Princess P-cups and there a Huge S!!t factor to the weapon..
There a myth that such a whip even steal dose not do much damage D&D 1d2, there was no brick left.. twice the speed of sound 4 ounces of Tempered STEEL Blunt Trauma.. Think MACE and Full Plate will not stop that. We are talking 2h sword type damage..3D8..
The *crack* you hear with a whip is a mini-sonic boom produced by the tip
The reason why D&D only listed a whip as having 1d2 damage, is because the rules tended to be written by phallic-obsessed repressed-boys: if it’s not a sword, it’s not even really a weapon
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=whuBjeGxQig
Watermelon vs Kung Fu ….. Chainwhip it cuts it in half.. Could not Find a video of one splitting or shattering Rock but trust me it does.
Even Leather ones are used to kill Gators in Florida..Never Mind Snakes.
It REALLY is a weapon.
When people wear whipped as punishment a special short whip was used a hard cain really 3 feet long(to weaken the fluid dynamics).(called a flogger there bunch of types cat,Paddles,Slappers ect. All made to punish). (movies are full of crap) you would not survive 2 Well Placed blows from a Bull Whip. Never mind 40. And a Chain whip?? No you would die.Modern Bull Whip Have Weighted steel cores but even a Old fashioned one could easily kill you with one blow thats why Punishment whips are short..
I take it Guesticus you were one of those phallic-obsessed repressed-boys Playing D&D? So was I,(Drow Girls yum) but I do collect Weapons and Whips are some of the most Dangerous in history. News Flash D&D not exactly KNOWN for it’s Technically Accuracy .. Sigh…
All of it. The whip concentrates all of it’s force on a relative tiny area. When said force strikes a solid surface like a metal breastplate or helm, it’s energy dissipates harmlessly as sound. A steel-tipped bullwhip won’t even dent a sheet of 16 ga. steel. A bullwhip is also highly situational. Not every strike will get that supersonic crack–especially in a melee. Sure, a bullwhip cracking right in your face can do some serious damage–blinding, maiming, possibly killing–but so can a dagger, and the dagger doesn’t require all that space. Put simply, you can have your bullwhip. I’ll take a bastard sword. You wouldn’t stand a chance.
And the Chain Whip not Dissipating, It weight is like 3 pounds Chaucer59, And the end is is 4 inches Long 1 inch metal spike(weighs about a 1/4 of a pound) and it will Dent 16 ga steel. Quite easily.
Whips are good standby weapons. Light, useful as a rope in a pinch. Not so useful in heavy foliage or tight spaces. I’d take one and keep a nice long sword or axe handy too.
The problem, Jonathan, is three-fold. First, you’re getting your whips confused. A bullwhip tip can exceed the speed of sound–and does so quite readily. That’s the “crack” of a bullwhip. The steel whip cannot. It can move pretty fast, but not the supersonic speed you’re claiming. Second, the steel whip, like the Japanese nunchaku, is only a powerful weapon on the hands of a master. Most of the idiots who buy these weapons online are more likely to injure themselves than an opponent. Third, the steel whip was never intended for use against an armored opponent.
@Chaucer59 thats my point I was not aware of this ether till I was fooling around with it. And Stopped..It CRACKED and destroyed the brick.Japanese nunchaku, is only a powerful weapon on the hands of a master, I never said you could pick one up and not waster it. You can’t.
But I have a real one, not a small Practice Chain I used it and saw it it can do.. Even if you can not master the Crack roll it still a 3 pound Flail..
And it will Dent and crush 16 ga steel Helmet No problem.
I’ve handled both: the steel whips and numerous helmets in the 16 to 12 ga range. I’ll believe you can dent a helm when I see it. Incidentally, denying isn’t enough to damage the wearer.
Cracking with a steel whip is no wear as easy as with a leather. I only pulled it of like twice. But it a scary Weapon And very easy to hurt your self with mastering.
@Chaucer59 With respect it a 3 pound WEIGHT,Even if you were to discount Fluid Mechanics (which I do not) thats more than Enough to Dent a Helmet or Crack a Skull and even if the Helmet was fine like any Flail or mace the Energy still will transfer through helm, skull to your brain and bash it against your skull. It does not Dissipate with a crack… Hit a guy in full plate in the head with a 3 pound Mace and the Wearer Will be Damaged. Helm or no helm.. Its Why Maces and flails were used against plate helms. And If you used a Chain Whip are you really going to argue that its a bad light Weapon that can not really do any harm?
That is the heart of this Argument. Is a Chain whip A dangerous weapon or not? Because I just showed 3 videos of Experts that said it is the most dangerous Martial Art weapon there is both to master and to use on others. I used the thing and felt it. Its not a Toy.
If either of those experts had demonstrated their weapons against an armored opponent, they might have a decent argument. In any case, the learning curve on those whips is brutal. Or if they had accomplished the whip-crack you claim to have done, possibly I would agree that the eeapon is as devastating as you claim. Most wielders are more danger to themselves than to others. Have you ever fought with a solid weapon, Wint? Not practiced in front of a mirror–fought. I have. I’ll stick to my katana.
Yes I have been in real fights with Weapons. But not with the Steal Whip, And I do agree its Brutal, I nearly cracked a rib practicing. As for armored appointments I can not find a video ether way, I would love to see true test. ( I used a car door and bricks, as for whip crack I was only able to do twice. Once beginners luck the other a lot (careful) tries. I was able to do it with overhand Roll method. But the fluid Dynamics Apply. With a tapering whip its easy but it can be done with a Steel Whip. I checked with a buddy who gave me the whip and he could do it.
Okay. Interesting, but clearly those chain tips are no where near the three pounds you suggested, and the operators can’t aim the crack. Loud but ineffective. I’ll stick with swords and spears.
This one does! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcYVjxac2Kw I am so happy we had this fight! Chaucer59 got off my lazy a$$ and got a tutorial Guy said the links (1 inch thick) will actually Break off the end if its Wrong Type WELD!! Yes I could of hurt or killed myself trying to crack it with my whip. It why they avoid it with regular chain whip.. So this fight might just saved my life..LOL yep Wrong Weld on it (ie no weld open links) Lucky it did not fly apart.

A work in progress, yes– but clearly progress is being made. 😀
Ok isn’t a lil too far north for Luska to be lurking?
Hey, Tiff saw her doing something badass and useful!!
Is the Waking Dreamer causing the world to come to an end?!
;”P
heh.. Reverse draw, underhand swing, stab….. and *then* realise you’re holding a bloody big twohander in one hand, with gravity catching up…
Well executed, and bloody funny 🙂
How did she juggle that BFS to reverse her grip on the hilt?
(As she grabs it, her thumb is on the side of her hand toward the pommel; when she stabs the whatsit, her thumb is toward the quillons.
Girl got Skills sort of…. Still wonder what the deal is with tiffs Sisters wear they Erased from reality or was it some think else?
@Fairportfan: Peony has good teachers.
Peonie is good at balancing things by way of defying gravity, after all…
Princess P-cups is either pissed about something, or she wants to get South where it’s warm (and she can ditch 5 layers of clothes) as soon as she can

If Peonie can take ’em, obviously land-sharks are pushovers in this universe.
Sorry, we’d agreed, they’re ‘land sharktopods’

Yeah, she needs a rapier or something.
Still, good to see that in their travels further on to the world’s edge and back, Neils has obviously been teaching her as requested.
Who knows, Maybe Tiff will end up being the captured one at some point and need rescuing from Peonie.
As Drowemos explained it to me, “Exiern” stands for “nExus InfERNal”, and this particular plane of existence is about as low as you can get without delving into the infernal planes.

Candygram!
Thanks, chemiclord. You should add that to your “About” page.
What happened to the sisters convo…? Did I miss something?
Not bad. She may want to consider learning to use a spear. A well trained spearman can hold off a considerable amount of swordsmen for a long time. The spear may be much lighter than a sword and if it is broken, you now have two weapons.
ManWitch: we will just have to wait and see
Sharktopus! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharktopus
She can put it out with one hand, thrust with it, but it’s still too heavy for her to keep balance XD
“Monstergram!”
*stabby, denied*
“I’m only a dolphin, ma’am.”
knite: momentum did the pull/stab(slash), then Princess P-cups eternal enemy (gravity) decided to play tug-a-sword
Poor Chevy Chase…stabbed in the nose before he could even say “Landshark!”
@chemiclord so if Tiff tell someone to go to Hell all they need do is grab a shovel.. LOL
As for Princess I vote a Steel Whip.

You also need to figure in Psi damage from Princesss P cups jiggling vs sentient males.
@Matt this is true…
The *crack* you hear with a whip is a mini-sonic boom produced by the tip

Twice Speed of sound + four Ounces of steel = 1d2….
What part of that sounds right to you???
All of it. The whip concentrates all of it’s force on a relative tiny area. When said force strikes a solid surface like a metal breastplate or helm, it’s energy dissipates harmlessly as sound. The real advantage to a whip is the +15 foot reach, not the damage.

Stab a land shark in the nose to confuse it
Same with regular sharks.
