That the unicorn has been letting her ride up ’til now suggests that Tiff’s still a virgin (and that Typhan-Knee never got to ply his wick down the ‘Hershey Highway’) and that the other crimes Typhan-Knee committed (two counts of murder, not the orphanage graveyards Alicia claims Typh’s filled) didn’t register on it’s moral compass.
But then again, it’s a unicorn. How’s it gonna tell her what’s wrong?
It’s Peonie it has issues with. The Unicorn moves away when Peonie reaches for it.

Unless Peonie has been able to ride before. But that would make me wonder if it’s not that a would be rider is a virgin, but rather has become pregnant. That would incur a hormonal change, and a change in scent.

It’s Peonie whom the Unicorn has a problem here.
I concur with peonie being the problem–but I have no problem with the unicorn having a problem with non-virgins. That’s just part of the deal. We don’t know the mechanism, there, but it might actually hurt the poor thing to be touched by the impure.
Also, Peonie was having dirty thoughts just then.

Maybe it’s reacting to Peony’s attempt to get close to it. She’s not trying to mount it but it might not care. The unicorn just doesn’t want her anywhere near.
My thought, too. Typh is a virgin but Peony definitely isn’t.
