True enough. A ruler is not what you would call a free person, at the end of the day.

Damn, never have I more regretted Tif wearing pants after seeing that middle panel.

Actually, miss prissypants, what you are describing is a glorified bureaucrat, suitable for, and amenable to your all-t00-sensible …suggestions. For the Good of the Alliance, of course.

Nevermind that a true leader does stick his head out, where the adventures happen, and Danger is Lurking. You think Danger politely waits until you’ve drafted up a Declaration of Intent in a properly choreographed committee meeting?

    But hey… I’m old-fashioned. And probably a Barbarian.. 😉

    @Nick D Waters – the funny is coming, don’t worry! 🙂

    As is Peonie’s response… 😉

On one hand a!!!!!e has a point that Peonie tends to needlessly court danger, on the other hand that argument has nothing to do with the whole scene at the weeding reception.

    . . . Okay, now i really don’t like this woman ^_^

I remember one of my old RPG groups discussing this very issue back in the day, when this princess NPC we knew ran off with us for the sake of adventure. The GM pointed out that said princess was, in all likelihood, doomed to a life of being a political object. Either she’d be married off on her father’s wishes, with no real say in the matter, or she’d be kidnapped and forced to marry her kidnapper – after which, her father would basically go along with it, as by -that- point she’d be ruined for any plans of his own, so he might as well use her as a hook on her kidnapper!

A lot of good people died trying to rescue Peonie? I’m sure they did. Should she thus feel beholden to this Alliance and avoid courting danger? Heck No, I say. If anything, she should go out -even more-, while she still has a life of her own to enjoy.

At the very least, she owes it to herself to make this bespectacled woman sweat ^_^

Fair points, if Peonie didn’t have a history of being kidnapped from withing the castle walls, repeatedly. Besides, sometimes “people of importance” MUST go to where the danger is, be it the battlements, the front lines, or a diplomatic “meeting” with the leaders of hostile powers.

This “adventure” was actually one of those moments. Peonie actually did all three, and succeeded brilliantly. Heck, she even faced a Mingalow, and parlayed with a full grown dragon and lived to tell about it. There aren’t many who can say that. LEGENDS get written about those kinds of people.

Well now, this is a whole different kettle of fish from what I assumed her grievance was on the last page…

An understandable, if misguided, grievance. She probably has a family member or friend who was killed by Faden during a rescue attempt.

She really is a self-righteous slapper, isn’t she! And someone please slap her

How many of those ‘hardworking people’ did it because Kingie was going to ‘sell’ her off to their rescuer?

Say what you wilt about ‘mercenaries’, but they are more likely to get the job done because they want to get paid, some farmboy hoping to be the next King would be too worried about themselves or their family and that’s probably why they wound up dead

There is a reason why ‘suicide’ missions tend to succeed more often they ‘normal’ missions

I may be mistaken, but if I remember correctly the reason behind this latest little adventure was to find out who and why someone was trying to kill Tiffany. It had nothing to do with greed unless you consider trying not to get assassinated greedy.

@Karen true but Peonie tagged along all on her own, so while greed may not apply the reckless throwing herself into dangerous situations still applies.

Don’t mind me, I like playing Devil’s Advocate from time to time.

The kingdom has a constitution? It’s not a feudal arrangement under something called a charter? How progressive!

@jmucchiello – huh, when I wrote that line I was certain I knew which page the Alliance’s forming constitution was mentioned, but now I can’t find it. I think it had to do with Peonie being told why she couldn’t order an execution of a cheeky guard…

I think it was at the beginning with the old narrator – and later on when they were returning to the city. And I also think dragon-boy mentioned something after pulling the king’s door off its’ hinges – though it may have been about an agreement there…

    Something like this:

Peonie: Stupid constitution, always getting in the way of my despotic leanings!
Guard: That’s sort of why we have one, Princess…

I’ll see if I can find it later.

Also, am I the only one why noticed this? The third panel says “Good hardworking people died at the hands of Faden’s twicemen”. Maybe you meant “Faden’s henchmen twice”?

And the as-yet-unseen Twicemen are mentioned way back in the very first page; http://www.exiern.com/2005/09/06/so-far/

This is actually why the new Queen is ALSO so interesting. Here you have a woman who is very much NOT a friend of Peonie’s, let alone Tiffany’s. But she’s also making some good points. She’s clearly the child of one of the many anonymous people that have died because of the machinations of the rich and powerful.

Is she RIGHT? That’s another question entirely. But she does have good reason to feel the way she does. She’s someone who doesn’t like Peonie, or Tiffany, but she’s not a bad person and she doesn’t want to kill them. She’s a complex person in a more interesting and complicated storyline that’s come a long way from the comic’s roots. I am impressed.
