Swords, Sorcery, And Then Some!
Howdy, New Readers! Thanks for reading Exiern!
Written by Scott T. Hicken with art by Antipus, the comic updates Mondays. Please check out the Archive to enjoy the earlier adventures of Typh and Peonie!
Exiern contains mature themes and is best for readers 18+.
This whole thing makes no sense right now. Like, the mechanics of it. I know I know suspension of disbelief and all that. Is there a time limit? Do Peonie and whats-her-face have time to plan? Maybe discuss way to pierce the balls without actually stabbing each other? Point being you’ve got two people fighting against each other but who actually support the same outcome. There’s no reason for Cardinal Richelieu there to expect this fight to go his way. Unless the magic combat lawyer balls also force the combatants to move against their will..it just doesn’t make sense. The only way this works is if things get really deus ex-y up in here. Someone kills one of the spellsingers, they stab each other simultaneously, whats-her-face was on Touchy McFeely’s team the whole time and DOES want to fight, or something. Otherwise this just doesn’t work out.
@PShark the magic forces them to fight, while the other two our doing something, I forget how Theressa explain, more or less, the two have to fight, cause the magic will it, of the user. It is dumb, though that as you describe it, that she does not support his outcome.
@TJgalon – Yeah, I guess. Theresa said several times that they’d be “compelled” to fight, but I mean…they’re clearly good right now and should be consulting with each other.
I think the magic will compel them to fight or they will face a slow death.
So if one of them trys not to fight or run the magic compulsion will damage them.
In D&D their was a spell that would do this called Geas. http://www.dandwiki.com/wiki/SRD:Geas/Quest.
30+ years ago i played D&D as a kid hard to believe i still remember this stuff.
well so far they have not tried to avoid the fight. we were never given any kind of time frame for it to start with or any reason to assume it didn’t require an honorable start of the fight even. so probably as long as they stay in the area they can wait to start. it could well just be that they can’t leave a certain distance of each other. what might be interesting is what exactly will happen once the first sword swing falls, then there is likely to be more elements of the spell to kick in related to their being compelled.
I get the feeling that the spell songs require constant upkeep of some sort. teressa kept singing during the reception before the wedding to maintain what spells she had in the castle going. so probably for the time being teressa and the cardinal are mostly tied up to maintain the spell song for the combat, which would explain some of why the ritual doesn’t involve either spell singer actually fighting.

Raising the death flag, your highness.
Snarky so-and-so.
Probably what Peonie needs, though.
Sounds just like me, talking to one of my daughters.

In any case, I guess we’ll see. 🙂
Peonie is unnaturally good at taking her clothes off. Doesn’t that orb kinda count as clothing? Then again, so does plot armor.
She’s a goner.
I hope we will eventually get an explanation for what happened to Peonie’s mom. IIRC she disappeared under “mysterious circumstances.”

In the comic before, Tiff gave her the sword.
This feels so awkward
doing all this love stuff in front of the Queen’s hand
