I would say that when it comes to protecting the horses the unicorn will always have a good point to make. I mean just look on the unicorn’s face while watching the horses.
Don’t know what its’ trying to be.
One one hand we have the female empowerement bit with Tiff beating up people left and right (in high heels no less)…but then again, it’s so over the top that no one can take it seriously and clothing seems to suffer Critical Existence Faliure far, far too often.
Maybe there is no grand deisgn or message (and I’m perfectly fine with that, in fact I prefer it).
Speaking of which, naonye know of a comic/story that actually SUBVERTS the First Law of Genderbending?
@TrashMan, That’s the point I was making in a comment I wrote recently.
Exiern is (was) two things. In a big way, since the beginning, it has been a spoof on fantasy stories. It’s meant to be over the top. It makes fun of how female characters in swords and sorcery tales tend to wear metal bikinis or other skimy outfits. It makes fun of the fact that female characters take far more clothing damage than injury. It makes fun of the “evil wizard” motif, by having him get his butt kicked right at the start.
Exiern is also a Transgender story. It’s not a story of adventure and battling evil, it’s a story of a big burly babarian getting stuck in a woman’s body and having to cope with everything that goes with it.
But even as I say that, that was under the original leadership. A year ago that guy turned over control of the comic to a few new guys, and they have been doing a nice job so far. The comic has a little more direction in the story now, and is maybe a little more serious.
If you haven’t done it yet, you might want to try reading from the beginning and you will probaby see what I am talking about.
I started reading exiern recently (past few months). I ended up reading through the whole comic in under a week, because I lack self-control.
My take on it was initially their was a guy who wanted to tell a story, but also unabashedly liked drawing naked girls (and liked the paid members aspect this could include). So he made the story unapologetically ridiculous at points self-aware that he could do that, and along with that disicion came the freedom to have humorous commentary on the fantasy genre as a whole. Liking the over-the-top-ness didn’t exclude character development.
I’ve noticed a lot less random nakedness recently which I attribute to the (new?) writer wanting to develop characters more and not focusing on that humor as much. I like it fine both ways.
@meps98. Yes, there IS a psychic connection between Typh and the unicorn. The unicorn forced one onto Typh when it first appeared. It said something psychically to Typh (which we were never shown, only Typh saying “you are in my head, such a powerful mind” or something similar) at which point Typh turned around and told the unicorn “I’m not calling you THAT.”
Faden is gone for the time being, stuck behind locked doors with monosyllabic hooded guys. So, with him gone, it’s perfectly naturally that the story take a new turn.
Melan-Knee (excuse me, Wyll-Line) is proving to be a bit of a surprise, too. He came off right at the beginning as being a big blowhard. But his inside knowledge of Niels and Peonie’s background reveals him as being a bit more than meets the eye. I’m also agreeably surprised that the duel to the death didn’t happen…or maybe it’s just being postponed. If so, great way to keep the story going.
zero-traveler, probably not. Bar-Cat was an adventurer. Barn-Cat is a stable hand. There’s yet another Tiff & co. meet later on. Tiger-folk may be unusual in human lands, but they seem to not be rare at large.
Be a Producer! Your name/title with an optional SFW hyperlink will be posted prominently HERE following the close of the month! You’ll also receive monthly mailings from Exiern’s author, Scott T. Hicken!

It seems the Cat person looks like a decent person. It’s that human, who’s pulling the reins that doesn’t seem like a very nice fella?
Interesting expression from Tiff in Panel 4.
Every girl loves her pony…
How about the expression the uni is giving Tiff? He don’t look pissed when their lips are inches away…
I think there’s some kind of psychic connection between Tiffany and that Unicorn. Their moods always seem to be in sync.
lokispawn – Yeah, that smile certainly looks like an expression “Grumpy the Unicorn” isn’t used to making.
Aww, Tiff loves her unicorn. That’s cute 🙂
This comic is fun. But somewhat confusing.

I sometimes wonder if the unicorn is somewhat a relative of Tiff’ in some way like her.
I liked the old direction. the humor in the first several pannel with Faden was great.
But then gain, the new direction gave us the King and his guards – the most epic characters in the history of Forever.
They deserve their own comic.

Is that Tiger guy the same one from the bar way back?
The bar where Tiffany first met Denver, I mean.
The one complaining about the bar being a Steel Market, because he couldn’t get a quiet drink without quest-givers coming out of the woodwork.

Hadn’t seen Niels’s warhorse next to the other horses before — Big Warhorse is Big.
