    Yes. Exactly.

    Its standard fantasy trope to do so.

    Course’ Urtica isn’t your standard fantasy king either; guile, deception, underhanded motives and tactics. “Evil-y” wily and intelligent vs. the brave, honorable and stoic broad sword wielding monarchs generally see.

    I would be happier about the accuracy of the statement in the last panel if they weren’t riding the only mounts they have at a full run.

    Urtica strikes me as the type to have acquired the “Evil Overlord” list from somewhere and take it to heart.

    Indeed, thats exactly what one expects huge armored figures to be: competent fighters, loyal, strong, and dumb.

    As for the Horses: maybe they are switching them each day at the post stations/Roayl Inns they rest in.
    That can speed up your travel tremendously (up to 80+ Miles/day with average Hoirses).

    @aRJay. They are in a hurry, they want to reach the pass before winter snow makes it impassable. (It’s the reason Peonie wasn’t dragged home.)

    They are running the horses at full gallop while they still can. Once they get into snow and tundra, they’re going to be crawling along, if they can move at all.

    Well the Unicorn I can see never needing to rest, but the other horses? Maybe there enchanted?

    @Dragondeathlord A wizard did it?

    The dumb brutes get shipped out to the very edges of the land, where they can get ate by dragons which they don’t believe in.

    Hadn’t thought of post stations (my bad) but Nills is still going to have trouble that is a very big horse (almost certainly a trained warhorse) I doubt that it would be that easy to replace.

    @Azure
    I know they were in a hurry, hence the comment, at a full gallop those horses are going to be finished in 5-10 miles, googling around says 40 miles a day top if the horse gets to pick how long they do the fast pace assuming you need the horse to be rideable the next day.

    It’s a comic, horses can gallop there all year long and look as fresh as a daisy 🙂 As for unicorn then being a magical beast, it wouldn’t get tired. As for the king and bodyguards.. Kings come in all shapes and sizes, there are the bold and just ones (though that’s more a fantasy material) and then there are those who do what they want, scheme, plot and what not, like Urtica (and which was more common in real life as well). And if such a king wants some really good bodyguards, then they need to be smart in order to adapt and overcome any possible threat and dangerous situation. Dumb bodyguards would get the king killed.

    I’d think that the guys he hires would have a more tactical way of looking at life and expressing themselves.

    Actually, I’ve been wondering why his eyes keep glowing underneath that helmet. I’d expect a certain amount of glitter from his eyes but that glowing is ominous, especially given what we’ve seen from Faden and Ctyx. Mostly I’ve just been chuckling over the names of “Niels” and “Bohr”. Witty in-joke, that.
