English is not my first language – what does the text in the lower bubble in frame 4 supposed to mean?

Some people thought that the pressures put on Typhan-Knee would lead to him being king… and a lousy one.

Had nothing to do with if he would be a lousy king or not, they just didn’t like the idea he wouldn’t have earnt it (as though the only way Typh could become King Typh the First would be through blood-ties, and now she has the chance of becoming Queen Tiff by killing her brother and claiming it through blood-spilt :D)

Is Melan-Knee one of the three angry dudes? Oh, and nice pun there on the notes. You definitely want to avoid stepping in “duty.” Heh!

@Azure – thanks for credit on the pun, but I’m just parodying a quote from WRECK-IT RALPH – “I guess you’ve really gotta watch your step in a game called HERO’S DUTY!” – so someone else gets the real credit for the pun.

    Loved that movie…

And yes, CHIBIERN is not only an homage to the Pac-Man kill screen, but if you sit through the entire credits of WRECK-IT RALPH the Disney Castle logo at the very end glitches into a similar kill screen with sprites of the Ralph cast.

Well, talking with Peonie is probably the best way of debunking the idea of a hereditary monarchy.

So the various tribal movers and shakers were worried that something about Tiff and his dad would lead to an establishment of a hereditary monarchy (or facsimile thereof) and which would lock them out of the power structures and decided to pre-empt things? Am I getting that correctly, I’m having a bad day with understanding things?

I am still a bit confused on the events going on, guess I have to wait till the end of the story 😀

Yes. On the previous page, their leader changed from being a mighty chieftain to a ruler with a crown and a national ambition. Why wouldn’t he also want to establish a royal family? If this put Typh in line for the crown without earning it by strength and courage, especially with a misfit mother, then of course the barbarians of tradition wouldn’t want that.

However, the ruler of the southern lands isn’t king just because he is an excellent statesman.

This actually isn’t the first time something like this has happened.

As I write the script for this storyline… I have said pages pretty much right next to me. It’s easy for me to overlook the contextual clues that would turn out to be days old or yet to come. In this case, I think it makes a lot more sense when you have this page and the last one side by side. But separated by two days? That can cause confusion.

Well… at least it turned out better than the thought of someone Urtica’s about to sleep with calling him “daddy.”

@Chemiclord – Ug, please don’t remind me of that one…

LOL English is my first language and I didn’t understand it in the least either. Makes more sense now after some of the comments.

Hmm, I agree. That one line might have been better worded to say “barbarian monarchy’ instead of ‘king’. It seems to me like tiff’s father had already established the ‘king’ part.

@Azure My guess is that they are leaders (or close to it) of some of the other clans.

Is this why the dorfs and rhakshasa are now slaves/servants to this tribe? Behrs found out and, after being forced to banish Typh, slaughtered 99.999% of their tribes?

I think they killed the chieftan. Notice how they were talking about him in the past tense?

These guys seem a lot like the mongols. The mongols, for those who don’t know, not only did a lot of raping and pillaging, but also promoted individuals based on their merit instead of their bloodlines

Ben: you will find a lot more nations were a meritocracy than many would believe, that pretty much stopped when they started becoming Patriarchal (if you aren’t a male, doesn’t matter how competent you are, you ain’t never going to rule, unless you have a male beside you telling you what to do)
