This is the first time in all the long years of reading Exiern that it’s ever felt lazy. Even gratuitous nudity has entertainment value (because, y’know, boobies; let’s not pretend it’s not a big part of the appeal of the comic). Now the apparent revelation that Tiff was actually gay all along? Yawn. I can’t work out if it’s a desperate attempt to find new material due to somehow running out of ideas; or genuinely something that was intended all along, but really only dilutes a lot of the far more interesting themes that still have so much potential for exploration.
Typhan Knee’s was not necessarily gay. There are other possible explanations – damage or erectile dysfunction for a start. I guess we’ll find out in due course.
And I agree, Peonie’s head doesn’t look quite right in the last frame.
I get the inpression that Tin Can’s dead sister and Tiff being responsable for it has something the do with it.
Or the fact that Tiff was still a virgin before the change and does’t need a sneaky princess to remind her of that fact…
maybe tiff was intersex, or indeterminately gendered, or possibly tiff’s dad, staunch feminist that he was, was going to have tiff killed for being a girl/intersex/not right and the shaman made tiff a man to prevent that.
I think the Princess Just Figured out why her dad has no Friends.
Yes @Quartz I agree there could be other Explanations for a virgin and lack of intrest in girls but when taken with Tiff’s Homophobic hate the ease at suddenly it being ok to like guys bc she a she.
Gays the most likely explanation.
Like I said before If some one changed me into a girl And I suddly Liked Guys and not Girls I would Freak out! And try to be a Lesbian.
Not bc I am homophobic but because I be scared of losing my Identity no just as a Male but of ME!
Tiff had the same fear of Losing her Male Identity as a Honorable Warrior but not of Losing her sexal Identy.
Liking Men and Not Liking Girls Never even came up as a issue with Tiff and that REALLY only has one Explanation.
Add to the fact he never was with a girl… Kind of Iron Clad it.
For the record I am not saying being a Virgin makes a Guy makes you Gay but I am saying being a teenage Male with easy access to Females ,Some Very willing (he chief Son, a Prince basically) And No consequences, a society that Encourages Impregnating the Ladies (his dad”you got the Girl Pregnant Lest celebrate and see if we can impregnate some MORE! ”
Basically its not a Hedrosexal thing for a Male of that age and society to choose to do who is straight. A girl can Fake Straight but for obvious Physiological reasons not all Male Gays can Fake Interest.
I just want to assure everyone that we we are not artificially drawing out the wait for answers. They are forth coming, and we are as eager to reveal them as you are to get them. But honestly; does anyone think it is in Tiff’s personality to answer such a touchy subject after being asked in such a way?
Yeah am I the only one who didn’t immediately jump to “pre-Transformed Typh” was gay? I didn’t get that at all from the last few comics. I mean, it’s a possibility but that’s not at all what I was reading into this.
PShark: not just you, didn’t seem right to me either, not to mention, we still don’t know what Princess P-cups was attempting to say, what Tiff thinks P-cups was about to say and what P-cups actually was about to say could be completely different things
Ok, panel 3 is just sooo wrong: if, as P-cups said earlier, and it’s just the girls there (Niels being ‘not here’), there is no reason for her to cover up her cups like that
@Johnathan: I would agree at this point that gay seems like the likely conclusion they’re coming to but that’s not completely true that she never freaked out about a guy’s attraction. Every guy in bars looking for their spleens can tell you that and she reacted rather violently to Denver’s first kiss.
Peonie. You got out of this without violence being inflicted upon you. Be grateful.
@guesticus. I didn’t think pre-swap Typh was “gay” either. Especially considering the VERY FIRST conversation Tiff and Peonie had. (A scene which appears to have been retconned.)
Still, even if Tiff is NOW finding herself attracted to men (Denver in particular), it does not automatically mean Typhan-Knee always was. Remember, it has been MONTHS since Fayden cast that curse, and the spell DOES have a component that affects Tiff’s physical, emotional, and psychological attributes.
I can point to the Ball where Tiff was trying to act like a “lady” and not only became shorter, but combat experience and techniques disappeared, as well as her entire personality and character changed.
It took Teresa smacking her in the head a few times to return her to normal.
God only knows what effect Fayden’s makeshift curse is doing to Tiff’s sexual orientation, and smacking her around isn’t going to make her suddenly find girls attractive.
I don’t think other reasons should be ruled out just yet. Gender dysphoria, I think would be a more logical assumption (and no, the two are not interchangeable, nor are the mutually exclusive.) Men with gender dysphoria may try to over compensate, especially in conservative cultures, by being overly manly.
I also think, that since being gay is the obvious explaination, it would be wrong. Though I tend to use that formula for almost everything.
I think that Tiff was more likely to be disinterested on the sensual things of life: quite close to asexuality, I mean. It´s not rare, at all.
The recent romantic interest on Denver could be him acting on what he (subconsciously) thinks a woman should do, thought that could be mixed with the desire to care of Tadpole´s wellbeing, out of a brotherly feeling.
In his situation, he´s looking for a close companion, and Denver did not look menacing, but a clumsy, dorky and slighty no-manly guy.
Was he interested in women before? Perhaps, yes, perhaps no.
But also didn´t take interest on men, as least from what we know before his transformation.
I think Faden´s curse is more likely to take the blame for what´s going on inside his head. He DID transform him into a woman, and that could also affect, hormones, the way his cerebral chemicals interact and his complete body, leaving only the previous personal construct of what “he” did think he was. As some comenter said in the early comics: “…Trapped in the body of a blond teetotaler who giggles”*snickers*.
I think the asexuality condition is perfectly valid, while allowing him to veer off exploring the posibility to, “marry a guy ” in case the things don´t work out. So far, Tiff has some practical side on his way of thinking. “She” didn´t reject in a flat out way the King´s Urtica proposition, of, ahem, marriage. Money was first for him, and Urtica´s saw it better to have her as a bodyguard to Peonie.
Weeell, this is as far as I can go today.
Comments a-hoy!
“I’m not here.” he said, poking the dirt with a stick.
Presently something jumped up from the dust and made threatening noises.
“Oh, look! It’s cute, wonder if it tastes good?” Neils poked the tiny angry creature with the stick, thoroughly ruining its attempt at being intimidating.
@Aklyon; oh, it’s entirely deadpan. Niels is staying as far away (metaphysically at least) from this topic of conversation as he can. He wants NOTHING to do with it.
Am I alone in not being disappointed if Typhan was gay before the change? I mean… it makes sense. It fits. The fact that some of us (or maybe all of us?) figured it out after SO MANY YEARS does not make us geniuses… nor does it make the revelation less interesting, if that’s what it turns out to be.
@Quartz – She has two legs. What may look like her arm under the I is her left leg. If you look closely you can see her fingers of her right hand sticking out from behind the word bubble if you follow down from the FF.
There is a uncensored version of this page in SexyFantasyComics, but she was covered only because her nude body was so small it was easy to imagine details that weren’t really there.
What gets me is that you guys are okay (and in most cases ‘turned on’) with Tiff being turned into a girl and you are okay with Tiff having feelings for Denver as long as it’s because of the curse and not because Tiff was always not attracted to women? What a bunch of whiny hypocritical losers! You idiots act like Tiff as a guy for a good chunk of the comic. She was a guy in the beginning for like a few pages.
Also, this is a fantasy comic about magic, dragons and other things, STOP trying to apply logic like ‘oh its the hormones’ and other blah blah bullshit. At least this is a good sign of who is a real fan and who some annoyingly tired a!s losers. Now thats some logic. You just got learned
I don’t see how we can conclude gayness (not that we can rule it out) – Peonie’s example was terrible. I mean, it assumes that he’d want to rape a woman. She could be thinking, “Well, so what if I am? Would you rather that I NOT be, considering what you just said? GFDI, girl. Think about what you’re saying!”
“Basically its not a Hedrosexal thing for a Male of that age and society to choose to do who is straight.” It is normal for a male of that age and society to possibly still be a virgin.

So I’ve noticed something(anew). this whole ‘censoring’ thing….is just to hide nipples???
*facepalmx1000* when is that nonsense going to end? I mean, society-wide?
(Incidentally, P -still- covers hers in the uncensored version. I would presume it’s because they’re out of the water, and it’s, well, chilly out there)
Be a Producer!Your name/title with an optional SFW hyperlink will be posted prominently HERE following the close of the month! You’ll also receive monthly mailings from Exiern’s author, Scott T. Hicken!
Yeah, Like I said, Tiff stopped it before ANY truth could come out.. Oh well.
Would love to know one way or the other.
It’s a topic that Tiffany’s spent pretty much of her life post-exile trying to run away from.
She’ll quickly realize that she can’t keep running from it much longer, though.
love that pout in the last panel, altho the neck seems to bend funny…like the head is too much to the right
I know the water “sticking” like that is for a reason, but it looks so… unrealistic. Couldn’t you just have put a convenient puff of steam instead?

@Xenau: Not the head, the shoulders.
as in, the shoulders should have went with the head a bit more.

Tiff’s reaction fits in mostly with my knowledge and understanding of her… If it wasn’t Peonie though I’d expect violence
Well more violence than a punch in the boob anyway. Something like picking the perpetrator out of the rafters…
Well, I’m glad! & yes that was perfectly in character.
Yeah am I the only one who didn’t immediately jump to “pre-Transformed Typh” was gay? I didn’t get that at all from the last few comics. I mean, it’s a possibility but that’s not at all what I was reading into this.

Typh could be asexual, not attracted to anyone, rather than gay…..

I’m hearing Niels say that last line completely deadpan, and its probably funnier than this strip was supposed to be.
…it’s all fun and games until someone loses an I.

@Tj commented that Tiff looked soft(er) in “super-private”.
She looks pretty buff to me in panel 1 of this issue.
Is that just chemiclord’s drawing variation or does Tiff get’s incredible hulk when angry?
@Aklyon; oh, it’s entirely deadpan. Niels is staying as far away (metaphysically at least) from this topic of conversation as he can. He wants NOTHING to do with it.

Why does Tiff have only one leg on the top-right panel?
@Quartz – She has two legs. What may look like her arm under the I is her left leg. If you look closely you can see her fingers of her right hand sticking out from behind the word bubble if you follow down from the FF.

“Hey Neils, want to jump into the middle of two angry women’s argument?”
“I don’t think so Tim.”
I sure hope that “Typhan was gay” is just a misdirection. IT kind of feels like a cop out.
What gets me is that you guys are okay (and in most cases ‘turned on’) with Tiff being turned into a girl and you are okay with Tiff having feelings for Denver as long as it’s because of the curse and not because Tiff was always not attracted to women? The plot thickens.
And anyone here who thinks this has anything to do with the way TIff was Born is forgetting the first rule of Magic.

Also, that water splash is awfully transparent.
“Basically its not a Hedrosexal thing for a Male of that age and society to choose to do who is straight.” It is normal for a male of that age and society to possibly still be a virgin.

(We simply do not know from evidence so far, Princess P’s opinion is not good basis)
Andy P,
