I’m guessing Diana doesn’t like outsiders?
Or that she is concious of how getting too much fish at once can cripple the river fish populace.
Either that, or she is very environmentally conscientious for a barbarian. If this is that different of an amount than they normally get, they could completely deplete the river after a week of this… and most of their catch would rot before they had time to smoke it or eat it… If this is a weeks haul, only do it once a week.
Mind you, that pesky “never” comment implies that, yea, she just hate for outsiders to impress her friends.
Can’t be too successful in a role that you don’t want to keep or they will keep you there.

Diana could have prevented Denver from setting up the weir in the first place, but didn’t. I guess things are a little more complicated than that.

Remember that Faden killed Diana’s father, so I doubt she approves of magic. The fact that Denver is an outsider is probably a red herring.
They should probably throw some of those fish back. Somehow I doubt that’s Diana’s issue, though…
No economists here? If you get a week’s haul done in a half a day, this is good for an unemployment rate of 93%. More if most of the time is spent waiting and/or the setup of the weir was a one-time cost.
Now from the story of the girl (and from the treatment of Denver) we know that people are sent fishing in order to get them out of others’ hairs. Making them more efficient will not accomplish that.
She might also see it as a way of weakening them with outsider ways. Making them fat and lazy.And that Fishing might be one of the few freedoms women have in there society. !0 to 1 she hates Denver and winds up in love with him.
It saddens me that a mind like Denver’s will most likely become lost to the Dragon…
@David. Yeah. Because freeing ourselves from a subsistence economy didn’t do wonders for us. Of course, they would never think of doing something else more productive with their time then living a hand to mouth existence. Just like we never did.

Is it a months worth of fish, or just a weeks worth? But either way, if they do that more than, at least, once a week/month it will spoil and they will end up depleting the entire fish stocks

I don’t see them emptying the river of fish, however. What would they do with all the extra fish? It seems unlikely that they’d take more than they can really use. More efficient fish-catching just leaves them with a lot of time on their hands and probably a lot of opportunities to get into trouble.

@Sleel: today’s fear in “civilized” countries is being workless. The ancient people would have laughed their a!s off. Productivity increase per person in last two centuries: thousands of times, thanks to machines and fossible fuels. Life standard increase: quite a bit. Life time work decrease: about half.
The numbers don’t add up. And part of the reason is that we make people work inefficiently for nonsensical goals. Goods that are designed to break, designs that are intended to become unfashionable, fashions that have no tangible value whatsoever.
Mogster: sure, if they only fish once a week with that net, but you have to remember that the reason we can sit here now and talk about being sensible with long term sustainable whatever is because we already went through times of pushing foodstock to the brink of extinction (in some cases, beyond the brink), the world of Exiern hasn’t learnt that lesson yet (although Diana might have an idea, but we will have to wait to find out her reasons for wanting the Fishie Net O’Doom never used again)

@Gallstone there not just killing machines Tiff was Clear they wear Hyper Intelligent Killing Machines! Plus If they can cast a Spell to make to make there Babies look human it stands to reason they can Cast one to pass as human on them selves.
@Guesticus: Don’t be stupid. One fishing weir in one village on one stream is no threat to the ecosystem, particularly if they wouldn’t have to fish more than once a month for half a day, and could then spend the REST of that month doing other things.
You’re obviously one of those reactionary environmentalists who see the death of every spotted owl as an unrecoverable environmental catastrophe, but do try to actually think on occasion.
She is a barbarian. She may just think that, if they can do a week’s worth of fishing in half a day, they’ll just sit around the rest of the week, and do nothing, get lazy and fat, and be wiped out by a hungrier, more aggressive tribe. A tribe that has to work hard all day for its food stays strong, because it has to to survive.
She probably sees it as a cultural threat.
While more food is good, she might not think it’s worth their way of life.
Sure, it’s only one weir in one stream, but while he’s there he might make other suggestions. Eventually, there might be little difference between them and the [derogatory adjective] southerners.
Also, if you have a seemingly warrior-focused culture, what do they do when they aren’t food gathering?

The only way it would have an impact is if they start OVER fishing. Historically, people only over fish if there is a benefit – i.e. if they are trading/selling to other people, or over a LONG period of time, their population grows too large for the fish to support.
Considering they are a barbarian tribe, and to them, ‘trade’ probably involves an exchange of the pointy end of weapons rather than money, I see absolutely zero reason they would fish more than they eat at this point.
Instead, the impact would be exactly as has been stated: Now, they get a month’s fishing done in a day. So they use it once a month. Now they have the entire rest of the month to figure out other productive activities that can improve the tribe.
If you show easy success that anyone can do, you become redundant.
Historically, the only time people stopped hunting/fishing an abundant source is when they run out of said resource
It might be an excuse to “increase the population” so to speak meaning more raids etc.
I think problem is more basic. Since they are using a net from one end of river to other it means very few fish will be passing through it. This may not decrease ecology of whole river but it will decrease vicinities fish supply and in winter before river freeze most wild beast would be hunting fish as their last resource. Since they can’t find any fish they will move upper stream and probably attack villagers for their supplies since I doubt they have enough manpower and storage capability to handle that much fish at the speed they are catching them. This won’t be a long term probelm either it will happen at the same day or a day later.

Greenstalker, you’re missing the point. The net wouldn’t stay there the entire time. If they get a month’s worth of fishing done in a day – they hang the net once a month.
The only way it will affect the ecology would be if they fish more than they eat and let it rot, or their population grows too large for the fish to support – in which case they were screwed anyway.
I skipped the middle bit of the chat about ecology and keeping the workers busy but did anyone mention that Diane only gets to be a guardian as long as the women are fishing. She would rather hunt but she wouldn’t prefer whatever else she’d be stuck doing if she could only protect them once a month.
