    Wait “his predecessor”?

    We know Raviner-Behr was on his “Rite of Manhood” when he found Gillian in Neese. So his “predecessor” was propably the then chieftan.

    I love how the old men seem to get smaller and smaller as they continue to dig their own graves… 😉

    Wait, is Gillian and Irene the same person?

    Sad eyes means Neils knows it to be the truth: his beloved (and not in that way, sickos) sister didn’t want to stay, and left him behind (would be nice if next page has the old farts saying how she wanted to go back for him when the time was right)

    This information throws more steaming piles ‘bullshitty doubt’ on the story that Behrs killed her (unless Gillian was his first wife and Irene was his second)

    I doubt they were the same person.

    More likely, Raviner-Behr kept multiple women. You know, because an overlord needs a harem to do all the cooking, cleaning and bedtime stuff in a big longhouse…

    Wrong, Gallstone.

    An overlord needs a harem to prevent usurpation. A good harem makes all the other warriors in the tribe think “If I were chief, I’d need to be married to multiple women at once… Damn, I’m glad I’m not chief.”

    Um, what does “to the black” mean in this context?

    @ GrimGhost:

    In this context, ‘Going to the black’ seems to be Exiernworld’s equivalent of ‘going straight to Hell’.

    Alternatively, Peonie has shown that saying just ‘Black’ serves as an expletive, such as saying s!!t, crap or f!!k on Earth.

    Incidentally, I apologize for all the swearing. ^^;

    I guess Raviner COULD have had more than one wife. So that would mean that Typh and Will still aren’t blood relatives to Neils if they’re sons of his other girl.

    By the sounds of it, Raviner wasn’t chief at the time but got the information for his then chief and that chief, not liking the source of the information, decided to do some extra bad damage to Neese. Irene likely figured they’d just steal some stuff and women (including her) like they were better known to do. But instead it was hit hard and her parents killed.

    This probably explains why even the old men regard Neese as having suffered exceptionally more than normal for a raid and if Raviner had a soft spot for outsiders then it could explain his successor’s thoughts that this was the root of the problem.

    @Guesticus,
    > Sad eyes means Neils knows it to be the truth
    More likely sad eyes mean that Neils realized that his sister was (indirectly) responsible for the Neese massacre.

    @deanatay,
    > An overlord needs a harem to prevent usurpation
    The accepted wisdom is that the worst punishment for bigamy is two mothers in law (and it scales!)

    @Gallstone
    > Incidentally, I apologize for all the swearing
    You should get the hang of self-censorship. For example, you could have written your statement in a nice, non-offensive way thus: “Peonie has shown that saying just ‘****’ serves as an expletive, such as saying s!!t, crap or f!!k on Earth”.

    I usually do self-censor. My apologies to anyone I’ve truly offended.

    Lurker: possibly, but don’t really believe Neils cares/d as much about Neese as he does/did about his sister

    Niels is giving a lot of credence to the old men’s story at this point. There weren’t many that knew of the arranged marriage Irene was forced into, and fewer who knew Irene’s thoughts on the matter.

    He’s gonna start adding up some things over the remainder of this arc, and he’s not going to like the end sum of that equation.
