@Guesticus – the color change of the water in those last 2 panels from blueish-white to a grayish-white suggests to me that the water is freezing to ice in that last panel. In which case raising your arm to block it is chillingly appropriate. 😀
On the other hand, if something is coming/flying at your face, be it water or wood, one of your first instincts is to get something up in front of your face to block it. Usually your arm which doesn’t do much good in the case of water, but instincts don’t really care about things like whether or not they work all the time, just so long as they work during the important times. Like when it’s wood. 🙂

Interesting bit of note… the water in both panels is actually the same color… you’re witnessing an optical illusion stemming from the differing color of the background in each panel.
I don’t think those theories on burns will come to fruition. recall that water tends to produce steam when it is significantly warmer than the surrounding air. This water is not steaming. (also the pot is being held with bare hands, so its unlikely it was already heated)
