I get the impression that Mel is bigger than Niels.
I’m starting to wonder if Melan-Knee actually hired the assassin. As I suspected, barbarians seem to frown at such a tactic and Mel seems offended at the accusation.
Of course, he could have hired the assassin and simply not want anyone to know about it.
The back story thickens.
And I’m shocked there isn’t a unicorn horn buried neck high up Mel’s a!s at the moment. The unicorn’s usual demeanor is “Knock the stupid woman to the ground all you want, but put your hands on me and I’ll make you regret it.”

@jumcchiello. Um, no. The unicorn seems to be a very passive creature. It only got involved in a fight directly when the geleoniecore tried to kill Peonie directly. It only got mad when Peonie tried to ride it. In the times where it appeared against Faden, it was mostly acting as a mediator so Faden couldn’t use his magic. We have yet to be shown a scene where the unicorn goes into battle for its own sake. (It DID flee from the dragon that ate quite a few of those IGC knights.)
Melan-Knee and Niels are about the same size, yes. Melan-Knee is a pretty big dude. Gets it from his father.
I think it important that Mel did not try to kill Typh for her insolence. Even knocking her to the ground involved pushing the unicorn without touching her directly.
I still believe that he will refuse to fight her (it is likely that fighting a woman is considered dishonorable in their culture) and that, instead, Niels will be able to get some closure.
The other option (the unicorn helps Typh defeat Mel) is still viable, especially in light of it’s recent treatment by him.
Starting to wonder is FADEN didn’t send the assassin… in advance. Y’know, manipulative bastard as he is.
@Lurker: Except that it has been stated that they do attack women and even have been implied to rape them.
He will fight Tiff and Tiff will prove she’s still the better warrior. After all, if Mel refuses, he proves Typhan right and he will be seen as a coward.
Besides, this is between Typhan and her brother. It’s far more important that she beats him.

Running away from a challenge is considered far more dishonorable in most Barbarian cultures. He will accept the challenge or his people will see him as a coward, especially if he running away from a woman.
Plus, we’ve already learned that these Barbarian don’t treat women well.

We’ve also learned that Barbarians treat women poorly, so what makes you think Mel would be against attacking one? Especially since he knows it’s his brother.

you know I wonder about the unicorn I really do. Why little background info on them that I wonder if the Authors of Exiern knows.
Unicorns have long history but at one point wear considered Angelic beings by the church never Pagan(despite pagan Origins) do to a legend that Jesus saw one. This never seem to stop attempts to eat them of hunt them. But not if it was on a Holy mission then you got the h#ll out of its way because it was Immortal till its Mission was complete and it returned to Heaven.
What Kind of Holy Mission ? Well it was sent for to reasons and only two and it was sent by Heaven itself… 1 to stop a war and unite two nations, 2 To Punish Rapists ..

I guess Unicorn tipping is Exiern’s equivalent of cow-tipping. The rurl north doesn’t really change no matter which world you are on, I guess.
Has no one else bothered to guess that this is all a set up by the dear old king, master of manipulation and political intregue, to get Tiff to do his dirty work? The barbarians along the border have been trouble for years, so how better to deal with them than to have them eliminate each other? Send in an agent who does not know they are an agent, with a personal grudge and willingness (or overzealousness) to fight and mangle things. Increase the chances of further in-fighting by ensuring that said agent is related by some means to the leader(s)…
