Is Bohrs dead? I think I did not follow exactly what happened during that chapter. Niels was under some kind of spell eh? And someone got operated on? Was that Bohrs?
@aRJay – it’s a reference to the TV show “Home Improvement”, where the face of the neighbour Wilson was never seen, always obscured by some conveniently placed object.
So is not seeing his face a plot point or just a rerun of the Judge Dredd jokes from 2000AD then? I’d be happy either way. I’m suspecting plot point because if it wasn’t then this strip would be pure filler/padding, and Exiern has rarely done padding. His hair colour is the only significant thing on the page. However, if we get a few Dredd/helmet jokes as well, that’d be cool too.
Damn, do you know how many years of therapy I had to undergo to forget that movie? All for nothing. Ah well, the new Dredd film with Karl Urban is much better. Everyone go see it when it comes on general release!!
1) They are brothers. Well, brother and sister now. Which goes into 1a) and 1b), 1a being that he is the one who put out the hit on her and is going with her to kill her along the way. 1b being that he didn’t, and he’s actually coming along to protect the princess.
2) They are some other relation. Perhaps even Tiff’s son. If so, he’s got an axe to grind either with Tiff or someone else in the “dear family.” Both 1 and 2 actually give a reason for why he is so hard to hit with magic. I could see the king “domesticating” barbarians and turning them into good guardians. It’s what he’s doing with Tiff. Why does she have to be the first? π
3) From left field, maybe both guards are dragons that have had their transformations halted. That would also explain their strength and magical defenses, and would explain why Urtica hasn’t gone ape slag over Denver yet. Maybe he’s looking for a third guard. π
4) Everything is a coincidence. I don’t trust that option, so I don’t really consider it. Hence the three theories. π
Medron – there are problems with some of your theories.
1. Brothers? If Niels was Tiff’s brother why didn’t he just kill her at the castle? As bad-a!s as him and his partner are, why even bother with assassins? Now half-brothers, that one I can see. Especially if Tiff’s dear ol’ Dad was one of the ravaging barbarians that destroyed most of the town, lo those many years ago. π
2. Tiff’s Son? Uh-uh, no way, no how. Going back to the very first strip and looking at Tiff before his transformation, the only way he could have fathered Niels and Bohr was at the tender age of about 5-7 years of age.
3. This one is possible. Not likely, since I don’t remember having seen any dragons so far, but it’s possible. My memory ain’t what it used to be and I don’t want to go back through the pages to refresh it. π
4. Again, this one is possible. But having read this strip from the beginning, I figure I have better odds of winning the lottery without buying a ticket than of anything in this web-comic having ever been a co-inkee-dink. ;-p
He’d be typhon’s half brother(our hero is only half barbarian remember) And the half he would be is nonbarbarian since teh barbarians would have taken women in the attack not left them behind.
1) Brothers. Why didn’t he kill her in the castle? Because Urtica doesn’t want him to. Urtica is the man. Nobody disses the man. IF they are brothers and IF he is the brother that called for her assassination, then he would have done it as a prelude to getting her out of the castle so he could go with and kill her. Of course, there is other reason that maybe he didn’t try. She beat the bajeezus out of him after jumping out of high story window. Maybe he thinks he needs support, surprise, or something else to even the odds.
2) Some other relation, or possible son. Do we really know how old Tiff is? Do we really know how old mister “I look awesome in plate armor” is? How quickly or slowly to barbarians age? Also, son was only one possibility. There are many other ways of being related. And any of none of them could cause him to have a real hate on for barbarians. Which he seems to have at least I “don’t like on” for Tiff. Now is that because she beat the bajeezus out of him or because of another reason? I don’t know.
3) Denver’s a dragon. His sister’s a dragon. We’ve seen them both in the comic, many times when it comes to Denver. He’s a baby dragon that hasn’t transformed into an adult dragon, but he has a LOT of strength and magic resistance. If Urtica and/or the church have figured out how to halt a dragon transformation, I could see Urtica using baby dragons as guards. They really would be the perfect guards. π
4) Coincidence. I write stories. I enjoy stories. Most writers do not waste the time and space to write coincidences. Red flags designed to make us look elsewhere? Oh yes. Coincidence that has nothing to do with nothing? No. So, either is giving us a clue on what the true nature of this guy is and hoping we will catch it, or he is planting a great big red flag up to get us talking about it and then laughing maniacally in front of his mirror and asking it to tell him “who is the cleverest of them all.” π
The answer is… Magical armor = magical resistance. Everyone jumped past the reasonable to the absurd without collecting their 200 dollars. And regarding his face. There could be lots of reasons for not showing his face from he’s somehow important, to the first post’s idea, to the author going “What should I draw him looking like? Bah forget it. lets add random stuff so I don’t have to come up with a face yet”.
@DanStanding
Actually, if you look at the comic the movie was VERY loosely based on you’ll notice that Stallone actually did have a strong resemblance to the comic character. And I apparently am in the minority here because I actually liked the movie.
Be a Producer!Β Your name/title with an optional SFW hyperlink will be posted prominently HEREΒ following the close of the month! You’ll also receive monthly mailings from Exiern’s author, Scott T. Hicken!
Wilsoning: I’ll say.
It would be funny if his voice changed when his helmet was off.
Typhan-Knee has blond hair. Neils has blond hair. Coincidence? Of course.
Coincidences don’t exist.
Is Bohrs dead? I think I did not follow exactly what happened during that chapter. Niels was under some kind of spell eh? And someone got operated on? Was that Bohrs?
Why can’t we see his face? I smell the plot thickening.
wilsoning?
He has a head?!

@Cazz. Bohrs is most likely standing by the king right now. Even though he’s a total badass, King Urtica still needs at least one bodyguard.
Heh. ANyone else remember/know about Smilin’ Jack’s buddy Downwind Jaxon?
@CrypticMirror – thanks to us Americans, everyone now knows that under the helmet Dredd looks exactly like Sylvester Stallone. π
Lol, love Peonie’s comment.
Damn, do you know how many years of therapy I had to undergo to forget that movie? All for nothing. Ah well, the new Dredd film with Karl Urban is much better. Everyone go see it when it comes on general release!!
Sorry for the relapse!
And I am very excited for the Karl Urban film as well, I second the “see it when it hits general release” motion.
Niels is Typhan-Knee’s brother
It’s Is Bohr, not Bohrs.
I’m still waiting for the introduction of their counterparts: Henrik and David.
Daaaamn, Niels is might fine from the inch of his head I could see.
Dammit – there goes my secret theory that he was a golem…
yeah, I thought that too lol
I have three theories.

Maybe they still are golems lol. Maybe his “memories” are imprints form his creator, or the child died in the attack too and was among the parts list.
Why is no one mentioning the corpse in the sack he just loaded onto his horse? Heh.
I will say this. One of the theories presented in this discussion is absolutely correct.
Theory 1 is absolutely correct then. *dun dun dun*
can’t remember. is Bhors alive? They patched him up right?

All I can say is I love the Tim the ToolMan Taylor reference^^
@DanStanding: No, anyone who’s seen Meet the Robinsons knows he looks like Tom Selleck.
