Sorry, Peonie can’t just say, “Oh, I don’t want to be Queen Regnant someday. Too much responsibility.” Then a nasty war of succession would be inevitable when Urtica dies. (Plus, Peonie wouldn’t live a day after the new king took the throne.) Peonie, listen up — ruling a kingdom is a nasty job, but someone has to do it.
Plus , PP ascending the throne would give Chemiclord the chance to write a scene in which Tiff walks up to Queen Peonie and says, “Congratulations. I hear you’re regnant.”
Assuming (and yeah, I know a!s-u+me, plus fantasy realm) that Peonie is adamant about not taking the throne (and I wouldn’t bet on her being that adamant, since she kinda likes bossing people around) then Urtica would have to formally disinherit her through an attainder. I’m pretty certain Denver at least would have mentioned that. Especially since it would trigger a feeding frenzy amongst the other nobles who would now be jockeying for future position. Urtica would at very least have to declare who would act in regent, but that was Peonie just a few strips ago (even if he left standing orders to ignore her). Plus an attainder would almost certainty mean Peonie would have to leave the country at the very least. And people would be approaching her to volunteer to re-assert her right to the throne (if she just keeps quiet, gives no orders, and generally agrees to sit on a horse looking pretty as well as marrying them/their son).
Of course all that changes if Urtica has someone else to declare as heir, although it becomes a very different type of political bloodbath. If Peonie really does intend to do a runner rather than assume the throne, then we’re looking at a very interesting time (in the Chinese sense) when the succession rolls around. Probably not a good time to be a peasant, we’re talking Wars of the Roses times again. Unless there is a solid line of alternate succession that everyone agrees to, Peonie would have the lifespan of a chocolate frying pan on a high gas. Heck even with it she is going to have to watch her step (people currying favour might slip the knife in her back without stopping to think whether it would really curry favour, just ask Thomas à Becket)
And she still wouldn’t be a “your grace”, The Duke of Windsor only got his title of “Duke” because his brother couldn’t bear the thought of someone going from Prince to “Mister”. You abandon your position, then you aren’t an anything. Even Princess Di only got to be called “Lady Diana” as a courtesy because her sons are in the direct line of succession.
So, anyway, Tiffany should marry Urtica to protect Peonie (hey, that is my flimsy justification of the week). And if Tiff is reluctant, someone tell her Urtica is putting the moves on Teresa. Tiff’s little rivalry should see her halfway to the honeymoon bed before her common-sense manages to make itself heard.
I’m still convinced that, regardless of Peonie’s stated refusal of the throne, Urtica hasn’t given up on his little girl inheriting. The King is a master manipulator, and his little game with Tiff has a lot more layers to it than he’s revealed to anyone. Getting his little girl to accept the throne is perhaps the most important challenge of his life, and Urtica is the type who loves a challenge.
BTW, Neils wouldn’t have made up the story about being disgraced just to win his way into this band of misfits, would he? Nah, he’s an honorable knight. Who’s been hanging out with Urtica. Yeah.
@chemiclord: That really doesn’t make any sense. It’s like saying “using ‘captain’ all the time got a bit repetitive so I thought I’d call him ‘sergeant’ for once”. If you don’t want to use a full title, using a different title doesn’t seem like the right answer. Surely something generic like “m’lady” would be better?

Huh. Was it Tiff or her brother who farked up?
Panel 2 — should be “Your Highness” instead of “Your Grace” (the latter being for dukes/duchesses).
Panel 4 — Hm, is this a reference to why Typhan-Knee set out to rescue the big-breasted princess?
Panel 5 (in other words, Comments) — FIRST?
Man, I love this story line. And the art is fantastic.
I wonder if said “Old Mistake” is why Typhan-Knee’s brother is trying to kill him / her.
Oh and since Peonie excused herself from being the successor to the throne. Niels is addressing her correctly.

I was under the impression that when Tiff took the job as Peonie’s “Protector” she also received a title, hence the “Your Grace”

It’s because using “Your Highness” repeatedly got a bit repetitive in script form. So I used a different title to mix it up a little.
There ya go.

@CrypticMirror there two other options, change the government to no longer have a ruler or Fake her death.
Personally I can see her Marry Faden and screw them all! (Including Faden)
Sadly can see Dad happy with that Match!
Bwahahaha, I love it.
