I bet it’s more than just a table knife, and that the wound was made there on purpose.

I’m with Olinser and Hikaro on this one.

That King doesn’t do anything by mistake….it’s all planned out in advance.

Hey, he’s already got you to stop attacking by just using it. A few more minutes of that kind of idiocy Missy and you’ll probably club yourself to death with your own arm

Anyway, she should be grateful the King isn’t based on Brian Blessed, he once killed 10,000 Turks armed only with a small fruit knife!

The King moved to the back, not because he was afraid, but because of dramatic precedence. In all the good fight stories, fights always occur in order of difficulty – she _has_ to take out the peons before going up against the badass. Never underestimate a man with bodyguards – he’s better than yours.

Aaaaaand the next thing she does is faint as the knife was laid with some kind of sedative especially made for her kind… (no it’s not poison, he said he won’t risk a war by killing her – besides, he could have chosen a better spot to stab if he wanted to kill her).

I don’t think he moved to the back at all, as much as his guards rushed past him.

And… that’s an awfully clean knife in panel 3 for just coming out of a stab wound…

You would be surprised. Unless you cut into a major blood vessel, a knife can come out bloodless. Unless you left it to linger of course.

  16. CrypticMirror
    December 29, 2011, 3:28 pm | # | Reply

It’s a very professional looking stab and deflection as well. You get an amateur stabbing someone and they tend to pull the attacker towards them to drive the knife/sharp-object into the flesh, which which tends to work out well for the attacker if they can take the pain because they are now inside the other person’s guard. Urtica, however, has stabbed with one hand, while using his left hand and forearm to deflect her off to one side. It’s a little hard to tell, but going by the corridor walls he appears to have stepped to the side while doing it, allowing the knife to come clean out on the movement of skinwalker-girl rather than have her come within his guard and him having to yank the knife back. She’s gained nothing from her attack but a wound in a major muscle, and Urtica has given no ground nor left opening.

I dunno if this was intended, but it makes Urtica come across as a nastily competent and experienced knife fighter. Where does a king get that sort of training?

There is a small element of truth to that, Hikaro. A lot of the characters have been rather filled out at this point in the story. They, in a fashion, tell me what they are going to do as much as I write their actions.

It maybe a tableknife but it is The Tableknife of Skinwalker Doom or something like that. I read a fable last night that mentioned it. It was made if I remember correctly from the bones of a skinwalker dipped into silver repeatedly then it was shaped into a blade. Or maybe it was a magicly cursed tableknife that know only hurts skinwalkers. Hard to remember it was mentioned once and I haven’t gotten to the point in the fables where it was found and/or used.

    @ CrypticMirror

Urtica wasn’t always a king. Was it ever said that Urtica inherited the thrown? If he didn’t inherit he probably won it on the field of battle and knowledge of knife fighting is as I would hazard to guess always useful in melle (SP?) combat.

I know what you mean. When working with established characters, there’s always some element of “the characters write themselves”, especially if you, as the writer, feel somewhat intimidated by them and their previous success (not saying this is the case with you, though). I have this feeling when writing fanfiction, as well.

This reminds me of a Chuck Norris fact:

Chuck Norris has only ever lost 1 knife fight.
King Urtica has never lost a knife fight.

As I recall it, cutlery at this social level is nearly always made of silver. So yes, a silver table knife would make sense, but then again it might not be a table knife but something else the King had up his sleeve.

Which just makes me wonder about what else he has up his sleeve. His Majesty seems so Crazy Prepared that I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he has as many tools in it as Batman has in his tool belt.

Actually, I suspect that’s just an ordinary, if somewhat expensive, piece of cutlery. y’see, I figure the guy using it is probably “Just that badass”-a knife-fighter who’s up against an opponent-even one with claws, can wear that opponent down with a thousand cuts like the one in the panel. This is a universe of Magic, and I don’t see an active King slacking on the mystical protection gear-esp. one that is in as good a shape as THIS king. (note the lack of bloat-means he keeps up on his physical training, probably including combat training-and what Royal Bodyguard is going to let his primary go ANYWHERE (even the john) without another layer of protection beyond the ranks of cannon-fodder? This guy’s dealing with at least ONE other Skinwalker-shapeshifter type. I’d expect he’s got both heavy mystical defenses on, (subtly incorporated into all that shyny pretty he’s got) AND is a competent combatant just on the nature of his role, the world he lives in and who he’s having dinner with/talks with at the moment.

I’d bet on it, as a matter of fact. Now, that doesn’t preclude the knife being something special, or being doped with something special, but given the specific nature of the threat, and the general nature of “Threats to the King’s health and safety every day”, I’d bet on the MAN being a tough hombre before I bet on the hardware being the right one for the job…

also, note that the “Table knife” is double-edged, which one does NOT use to carve up one’s roast or corral the peas-it’s a fighting knife, if somewhat short-bladed. Kind of like the old “Gerber Guardian” that everyone was hiding on their LBE’s a couple decades ago.

Maybe the king’s taken levels in Invisible Blade? But yeah, poison would be neat but I like the idea of the king having allot more knives on his person better. Would make for a much more epic fight to see him stab her until she passes out from exhaustion/blood loss.

Actually CrypticMirror brings up an excellent point. In Real Life (I know, but bear with me), pretty much the first thing you are taught in any martial arts when dealing with knives is this: If you fight unarmed against somebody with a knife, you are GOING to get cut. Mess around with avoiding the blade and you are going to die. The only real way to win is to accept a nonfatal wound in return for winning the fight. If this were a realistic fight, Urtica just scored a blow that would more than likely render that forearm useless (went in all the way to the hilt, and that wound is in the major muscle group of the forearm), while the skinwalker gained absolutely nothing from the exchange. Now they are back at a neutral position – advantage, Urtica.

    Windsinger asked: who’s d’artagnan?

To fit the mold, you’d need someone young, promising, eager to learn, and prone to falling in love. Thusly, the answer is: Mira.

    And, it’s ‘The Four Muske-teasers’.
