This reminds of a story I heard once about a governer in the British Raj. Apparently, the governer was witness to a Hindu funeral, which used to involve burning the recently widowed bride of the deceased alive ‘so she won’t be alone.’
The governer was understandably upset about this and had the whole affair broken up, which prompted a confrontation with a Hindu priest, who explained the tradition to the governer, who responded:
“Well, back in Britain, we also have a tradition: if a man burns a woman alive, we tie a piece of rope around his neck and hang him. We’ll respect your traditions if you respect ours.”
