Not to mention this hands not very Loyal. The Royals Approved that is Enough.
She Is the Princess, That is enough.
She basically Losing her temper with the Princess Because she Lost her Temper with her father the King and spoke back at him.
But she doing the same thing and the Difference socially far greater.
And she was not given leave to speak so..Nor ask for it.
And criticizing the Princess for getting above her self when its questionable she even did.
Dignitarys saw a strong Scary Queen not a child Princess and easy to control. And as a result Called off a Assassination.
Princess reminds me of Catherine the Great, I heard a story once that a Ambassador seeing the new Empress thought her weak so he tried to over charge her for Grain said the did not have enough do to a bad harvest to feed her people and his. ( they had great season) So she said no problem I just have your none farmer Eliminated from your Nations the Population …Then there be more for my people and you can the survivors charge less.
He then after laughing at her Joke (hoping to god it was a Joke) decided they would not have to charge so much…
I say again this Girl very bad at her job.
Princess as Future Queen and Evil Overlord Aced it!
Made her Evil Over Lord Dad very Proud.
Of course, they exited before hearing the King’s comment on the value of questioning traditions and such and even if they’d heard it, Olivia has already shown herself to care only for what the King and Queen want/need, not what the princess wants. Olivia is treating her very short tenure as hand to the new Queen as having significantly more weight or importance than Peonie’s whole lifetime of being raised by Urtica among the same cutthroat nobles and opportunistic foreign dignitaries just shown. She may be older and more experienced overall than Peonie (we don’t really know that, though), but she’s let her position and duties go to her head far too much and too quickly. All other factors aside, she owes Peonie more respect and deference than she has shown her up to this point, on the grounds of “princess” alone. That ignoring all of the times Peonie has cheated death, escaped capture and otherwise dealt with situations in which Olivia would probably have died or worse.
Not sure why the hate for Olivia. She is someone you would want, she better then a Yesman, as she tries to do what she told, but at the same time, not afraid to tell someone, more so the princess, that she believes she wrong.
No, Oily Palms is a servant loyal only to Terry, and while Terry is currently (until they can figure out what and why she is humming) Oily is still just a handmaiden and Princess P-cups is the Heir (ie the next ruler)
Princess P-cups finally stood up for herself and showed strength and courage, at no time was what she did be ‘wrong’, Oily is raising herself way above her station
The hatred for Olivia is pretty well founded, she’s a bad character plain and simple. She comes out of nowhere, she suddenly runs stuff, she one ups Tiff right away and then snarks about it, she is portrayed as “the voice of reason”, her behavior which is completely out of line is ignored or glosses over and so on and on.
She is more and more resembling some fan fiction Mary Sue, that’s been inserted into the story by a writer as his contribution and now starts to warp the story around her. She’s bad, very bad.
These three women, like the new queen and the dignitary who called off the assassination, see all clearly marked as key players. All five women have perfect, gravity-defying breasts. See, if Peonie were flat-chested, we’d know she was an unpromising royal offspring. Likewise, the self-proclaimed “Hand of the Queen” May be irritating, self-important, and bitchy, but with breasts like those, you know she’s going to be a formidable opponent.
I think you’re being a little hard on our fair writer. Not every character has to be liked and while people are stating that, ‘she’s not allowed to treat Peonie that way!’, she _is_ treating Peonie that way and there have been zero repercussions. Does she have that much power? Why does she have that much power? Or is she just a jerk? Should punishing her for her insolence be Typhan’s job? ‘Nobody puts down Peonie but me!’ Or, some sixty pages from now, shall we all be indulging in some much-anticipated schadenfreude at Olivia’s expense?
I admit, I didn’t much care for the insta-knockout (there wasn’t even a satisfying thump) but I’m willing to set that aside and believe there is more to Olivia than humbling our fair barbarian and putting down the princess. I mean..
Ooo, Oily said she cares about the future of “The Grand Luminary Alliance”, betting that that is all she cares about and doesn’t care about who is at the head of it, in other words, willing to ‘betray’ even Terry if whoever she suckles up to proclaims to want to help “TGLA”
Oily IS a Bad character, Needs to go. She Way beyond fixing…She one dimensional, And clearly telegraphs the WRITERS intent, Gee let me guess she secretly has reason to hate Peony..
Why ?
She is her sister. Yawnn…
Yes this was a guess but if its correct in anyway KILL HER NOW!
She will not even make a good Villain, Writers investing to much energy into her to make her liked, and Important, Like a bad blind date trying to be liked…. Fans hate her, We will stay hating her, The Desperation to make us like this B#TCH is Smelling Like Bad Fish..
Sorry Mr Hicken I love your work but not this.
She suffering the story. And you clearly Like the character and think she great, but you failed to show that instead you tried to tell us that. When I was a Kid My father forced me to eat chocolate bc I thought it looked like poop I did not want to eat it. He thought if he could get me to taste it once I love it.He forced me to eat it I threw up,Thinking it tasted like Poop. I Hated the Chocolate till I was 20 and I still do only eat certain High Ends .
Oily is POOP your trying to force us to like.. Never going to happen..
Please Mr Hicken , Scott do not make us eat the poop..
There No Objectivity shes the teacher’s PET. Oily yes that Name works.. Can we see her Eaten? Alive ? Slowly? Might return some of the pain we endured reading her.
I won’t betray my thoughts/plans on Olivia, but I will say that her time with Tiffany/Peonie has always been intended to be finite. We’re not far from some new developments.
@jonathan, I see no indication that Scott has made any effort to make us like Olivia. All the main female characters in Exiern (except the elderly ones) are physically hot–big breasted, hourglass figures; even the hateful ones. Olivia has been among the hateful from the start–arrogant, sel-important, dismissive of the Princess–which I believe the author intended. You’re projecting.
@jonathan wint – No worries at all! I know that my preference to hold back my opinion about my characters and plans opens up all sorts of interpretation and theory. And I think that’s most fun, for reader and writer. And I can’t be upset if, within that vacuum, someone is concerned about a possible outcome that they think is less-than-optimal. It means you care about Exiern, and how could I possibly be put off by that? 🙂
I’m also a rabid trope reader, and Mary Sues are something I AM trying to avoid – and if people think I’m failing at it or a characters is coming off that way I certainly want to know!
Those who claim to be the strongest believers tend to be the worst hypocrits. Let us all now partake of the finest herb the Grand Alliance provides and chill the f out.
Puts me in mind of a parrot in a Mercedes Lackey book i just read – she’s a LOT smarter than regular parrots – even than a lot of humans – and she greets people who make a bad impression on her with “I can talk. Can you fly?”
No guys I real am a Nut. Asperger syndrome they call it now, but I had it back when they called it Leonardo da Vinci syndrome with social emotional disturbance. My brains bigger and I am in some ways very smart but I act like jerk and miss social clues .I have very bad balance(I need to close one eye to stop falling over in bright light, and some time do not feel pain) and stereotype assent minded professor and go off on stupid tangents. I explaining this because I been a pain in the !@$. I apologize. I real do not mean to be nor can I really help it as I do not see it till later on. So please forgive me. Because I will do it again but not intentional. So in advance let me say I admire every one here and I am sorry if I ever get to be a rude pain in the A$$. I really do not see it nor mean it when I do it. And I have the highest respect for all involved here.
@Scott, I think it really comes down to where you want to go with her. If she becomes an actual long time character and not an antagonist, I’m effectively and now done with this webcomic.
It’s not meant to be a threat or anything (would be pretty ridiculous) but just in her introduction she already one upped tiff, something no one else achieved so far, somehow managed to outrank the princess heir in the eyes of the guard, is allowed to act as if she was the superior, somehow is “the voice of reason” chiding the other two who are portrayed as pouty children and so on and on.
@Guest – I totally hear you and the others about Olivia. As I mentioned earlier her role was always intended to be finite, and in the next couple pages we will see focus back on Tiffany, and then we do finally find out what Teresa has been up to. But when we get to the adventuring there’s no need to fear it may be “Tiffany, Peonie and Olivia” – that is not Ms. Palm’s part to play.
LOLOLOLOL! OMG, this is just too awesome. First let me say, I am a long time reader, first time poster, and I have to say I love, love, LOVE this comic, truly kudos to all the writers, artist, etc. Now that that is said, I’m also a reader of comments, and I have to say that all this moaning and whining and hate ons the fans have for Olivia is high-larious in the sense that if you go back a few simple chapters and read what the fans wrote about King Urtica when he first came onto the scene and how quickly the tune was changed, you too will ROFL so hard with me. Again… love it!

Tiff thought she Shrunk and got Girly again!lol
There’s caring about tradition and stability…
… and there’s caring about having the best possible future ruler to ensure prosperity and advancement for the nation.
Chaos and change must have their place. Strictly enforced order only breeds stagnation.

Princess reminds me of Catherine the Great now I think on it in a lot of ways.. If rumors and legend were True they share Certain Hobbies…
Olivia? You’re officially grating now, and for the record, Peonie cares for the alliance more than you.
Here, here! 🙂

@guest I think we are supposed to hate olivia

She could be from the future. <_<
Chaucer59: Also true. ^^

I can just imagine Tiff telling Peonie that is she wants her to smack Olivia upside the head she will get no objections from her.

Her skin just changed color…
@Chaucer59 @ScottHicken I read to much into stuff and I am nuts. Apologizes.

Jonathan,
I think rather than how you’re seeing this, it is the total opposite. I think Scott is doing everything he can to make us HATE Olivia.
Those who claim to be the strongest believers tend to be the worst hypocrits. Let us all now partake of the finest herb the Grand Alliance provides and chill the f out.
“My excuse is ‘barbarian’. What’s yours?”

@Jonathon No prob. I have Asperger’s as well
@jonathan wint – Thanks, no hard feelings here!

P.S also so know this post is late, simply in process of rereading comic
@awesomesauce – 🙂 thanks!
Thanks for calling our attention back to this comic.
Reads differently in light of what we now know, doesn’t it? [not talking specifics to avoid spoilers for first time readers]
Olivia is awesome. Haters can go sodomise themselves with pinecones.
@SotiCoto I don’t suppose you’d care to provide some facts to support this strong opinion of yours?
