Arrest him, that sets the precedent for the event, but if you let him get away that will also set the precedent for the event. So, move quick and take him down.
No precedent is brilliant. It gives you aa chance to set a precedent in your favor. In this case the precedent next time is that priestly guys who try to pull this off get put to death per established precedent if there is any hint of outside interference.
The rules of the fight have been rigged so the Champions die, up till now their has bean no reason for one champion to not want the other dead, so the assumption is Shattered Orb = Dead Champion.
Gotta say, this is one poorly thought-out form of judicial combat. Champions can be arbitrarily named against their will, loopholes in deciding victory. Liechtenauer would be spinning in his grave.
Well. This sucks. Corriander lost, and he’s STILL walking away “innocent.” Hopefully, next page, he walks up to ms. half-dragon, insults her and gets killed?
Nobody1111: believe that that was the case: the winner was simply the one who plunged their blade through the others orb, don’t believe it was stated that the loser had to die, Cori still lost
there was no rule saying the combatant had to die,
the only rules stated was they combatants would be forced to fight,
and that the victor had to plunge the sword through the orb on the opponent.
as Coriander’s champion failed the duel, Coriander is guilty.
there is no loop hole.
he’s talking s!!t, and trying to escape.
Typical villain. The rules don’t state the champion has to die, but the arrangements imply such so he’s trying to build a loophole to weasel himself out of it.
But what the King was just told was that he pretty much has free reign to interpret things as he sees fit. Hopefully next page he decides on a more literal interpretation in which orb was penetrated = guilty and arrest.
Tiffany approaches to recover her sword. Once she removes it from Olivia’s chest, she will use it to remove Coriander’s head from his body, thus establishing the new precedent. All will then be right with the world.
It’s pretty clear why this form of dueling is no longer fought AND why magic (especially spellsinging) is treated with suspicion and hostility by the Church of Rem. If your religion was codified in a culture where spellsingers were in the habit of forcing your friends to fight each other to the death to settle disputes your friends didn’t even have anything to do with, you’d understand why they were so quick to gag Theresa in a previous story arc.
That being said, everyone else’s comments have pretty much summed things up: there’s no precedent, the bastard’s just trying to weasel out of things, the king needs to arrest and/or kill his a!s and set the precedent. Now. Immediately. No precedent = time to make one.
As usual, the “more bad guy of the moment” doesn’t “win” the fight, but doesn’t really loose anything. The “less bad guy of the moment” “succeeds”, but doesn’t actually “win”. Oh, and the “good guys” screwed everything up like idiots, and someone got hurt for no reason. Gee, just like real life. I read comics to not be reminded of real life. Shame that.
We can make spellduel for any issue, select whoever we want (even high officer of kingdom), manipulate them to fight to their death and walk away without any troubles while survivor of our ‘tools’ will be charged with murder of another.
Sounds perfect. Anyone wants to spellduel with me using King and Pope?
Just arrest him, it is harder for him to make a fus from solitary confinement, and when a new pope or whatever they call it have been selected he can just hand him over to him for judgement.
Vorlonagent: what ‘draw’? Olive’s orb got pierced, but P-cups’ was untouched
Idiot: yes, noticed that as well
TJgalon: yes, was wondering that as well: don’t see anything she did that changed anything, Terry was the one who had a magical handmaiden (wait, which side was Olive fighting on again?)
Ok first of all Theressa might not tell all of the rules just the ones that crowd needs to know which are two sides will choose champions place orbs on their chest jsut above hearth the orbs will ensure half of it will be skill of fighters and other half will be the purity of the song and until one orb pierced the fight continues.
1) Theressa not obligated to tell more than these points infact she didn’t mention the fighters will be controlled by orbs but the indication was there similarly the orb being pierced might directly related to rule that the champion that died makes the one lose since piercing orb would mean certain dead (we were not told how hard orbs are but since they can only be removed by a sword piercing them i say they should be very hard since a slahs does not cut it out)
2) IIRC the duels that was made to solve a dispute in middle age were all to death you could name a champion if you want but it was usually choosen from friends since a friend would have more reason to fight fullest rather than just survival but there were some duels where a champion from opposing side choosen and they were forced to fight in the name of honor (and ofcourse survival)
You want a way to get your way, kingie? Here’s a one-word cure for your woes, courtesy of Lord Vetinari, which will justify everything you’ll do anyway: “Tyrant.”
Be a Producer!Your name/title with an optional SFW hyperlink will be posted prominently HERE following the close of the month! You’ll also receive monthly mailings from Exiern’s author, Scott T. Hicken!
Hmmm. Not good.

I think atm I am super confused.
The debate may be rendered moot if Olivia bleeds out while they’re pondering.
wait, was the original terms that the champion needs to die? not just that you need to destroy the orb?
the original phrasing was “plunge you sword through the opponenets orb”, I’m doubtful if this is not just an odd loop hole

O, just grow a pair and arrest the douchebag. This is annoying as watching Cliven Bundy flouting the federal grazing laws.
Oh, and there is a missing ‘a’ in P-cups’ last bubble
Plan B Tiff rips his head off…

Is it too much to ask for someone to just kill the stupid f***

I’m betting good money Typhan-Knee will just kill Coriander before he leaves.
The “clarifying” battle ended in an unforseen draw. The original challenge stands.
This is no time to be Lawful/Stupid

@Uhl: At least it looks like Typhan-Knee will be retrieving his sword, so Coriander will likely not escape alive.

Is it just me or does the coloring in this one look different? Flatter?
Inb4 Typhan beheads him.
Lets see if I got this right.

I wonder how did Peonie change anything.
Just arrest him, it is harder for him to make a fus from solitary confinement, and when a new pope or whatever they call it have been selected he can just hand him over to him for judgement.
“No Precedent” equals “Time To Set a Precedent.”
And make certain it is not one that weakens you…;)

DUDE! You’re the fracking KING! You set/make the precedence where none exists! Grab some royal cojones and arrest that prick.
Plus Coriander just threaten to purge his kingdom, i’m sure he’s within his rights to capture coriander now.
I agree it is way to lame to just allow him to walk now. Utica didn’t get to his position by being dumb

Just kill him already.
Surely that’s one of the first entries on the King’s checklist.
When there is no precedent, you are free to set your own.
