And let’s hope Dan is NOT the head guy of the Guards.
So I have a feeling this group will be a missing guard or two by the time they return to the castle.
We’ll see.
To be fair, a LOT of guards died during the festivities not too long ago. Odds are the demand for competent guards to serve in key positions outstrips the supply presently.
@CPUGuy1: I expect there will be a LOT of “missing” guards soon. But Dan will not be one of them. He’s starting to seem to me to share some qualities with Henchman 21 and 24 from “The Venture Brothers”; that “perfect combination of expendable and invulnerable” that allows him to survive where his friends don’t.
I suspect the Kings got a reason.. His crown stores Memories and it might amplify his intelligence if so …Maybe it draining theirs brains to Power his.
Guards aside, I’d think that in a horse-centric culture, you don’t get to be an adult without learning to strap the saddle on. This is roughly like trying to drive a car without remembering you need pedals as well as a steering wheel.

Yes – Back Links are very informative … I remember the situation, but forgot it was Daniel who was involve. Good to reread a few months back every so often. Thanks.
50srefugee: in that same horse-centric culture, you have people who grow up in the city and never leave, or even within a castle (third generation guard or other staff), so why for the need for them to have ever ridden a horse before?
O.B. Juan: depends on how he got on, it’s possible he climbed onto the stall wall or fence and just swung his leg over (have seen people mount a horse that way, specially those not accustomed to four-legged beasties, see point above)
This does Explain nicely why the North Great Warriors or not can invade the Much Larger South Regularly.. They can never get there bc there falling off their horses..
It’s actually not as hard as you might think for that to happen. Horses don’t actually like to be ridden. And they aren’t as stupid as ppl like to think they are. It doesn’t take them very long to realize that if they hold their breath when someone tightens the saddle, it wont be as tight later when they let it out. Which makes the saddle loose and more comfy. And then it rolls off when you try to get on. Successfully riding a horse is always a battle of wits. And remembering what you checked. And ALL Shetland ponies should be KILLED and turned into glue. That is all. *mumbles to himself petulantly* miserable f!!!!!s escaped from hell, kill em all.
1. The king’s personal bodyguards are where the king’s preferential picks go. We’ve already seen that they’re pretty competent. Sure, the king wants his daughter protected also, but she’s not quite the same target. And, unofficially, his daughter has a very good defender in the group she’ll be traveling with in addition to the official ones.
2. Just because the best of the rest are in a particular assembled force does not mean that the worst of the rest isn’t there also.

Where does the king GET these guys!? Seriously, is it impossible to achieve a majority of royal guards with half a brain?
I think the King himself must have most of the IQ quota for the entire kingdom… 🙂
They are guards, not cavalry, just be glad that ‘Dan’ knew which way was the front

And THAT is why that guard is not carrying the key to the stables…
Those glasses and that name make me think that “Dan” is supposed to look like someone in real life.

@Kathucka – he’s a little throwback reference – http://www.exiern.com/2011/02/21/guards-called-up/
I wonder if Phi cultivated being deceptive without lying from being nervous about talking to the king.
That one guy: He’s not being deceptive.
“Guards that are here” is a large set that INCLUDES but is not identical to “the best guards”.
So these are the ancestors of the troops from F-Troop.

@CPUGUY1
He’s not, look at Scott’s link.
Common strategy especially when expanding is to pair your best with green apprentices who learn by watching the pros.
Hey the guy manage to stay on horse longer than me and my sister is a licensed trainer 😛

He did say the best guards not the best soldiers.
I am surprised he was able to get on the horse in the first place with an unsecured saddle. It should have come off at that time.
I will admit that I reacted to his predicament with ‘unbridled’ glee.

In other words, “I’ve collected all the best guards, plus some of the rest.” Fair enough!
