Swords, Sorcery, And Then Some!
Howdy, New Readers! Thanks for reading Exiern!
Written by Scott T. Hicken with art by Antipus, the comic updates Mondays. Please check out the Archive to enjoy the earlier adventures of Typh and Peonie!
Exiern contains mature themes and is best for readers 18+.
Did Tiff just get more manly/muscular looking again? She was so soft looking in the bathing scene not that long ago… now she’s all hard-angles? Unconscious morphing and changes?
Now, there is only one thing wrong with this. The Sword… And I mean, literally, from an art-perspective… It’s Escher-isque. As it invisibly twisted so the hilt part has the upper edge away from her body, but the tip bit where she rests her fingers, has the upper edge towards her (Or at best straight up). Or at least thats how it looks from how she’s holding the hand.
Daaanggg! Gainaxing will NOT be an issue. Well. We now know why Tiff hasn’t been killing anything with that sword. Its edge is so dull, she can wrap her hand around to finger the flat of the blade on the other side without cutting herself.
Oh, yeah. The “curse” is body shifting her again. She won’t be “male” any time soon, but she’s a lot less “girly” than before. Let’s get ready to RUMBLE!
OK, as a woman, I have to say that taking a shirt off while holding something in hand is difficult at best. But holding a sword while doing it could lead is self-decapitation.
To be fair, the sword’s enchanted to never lead her astray and has demonstrably left people stripped to the skivies without leaving a single mark on their skin, it can probably handle preventing self-decaptiations too.
Come to think of it, an enchantment that absolutely prevents your weapon from harming the wielder and/or people that it would be suicidal for the wielder to harm could be pretty handy… no more impaling yourself on your own sword when you fall down a pit trap and roll a natural 1 (or equivalent)!
Tiffany’s shifting body shape is a compromise of sorts to Shipeng… who prefers to draw a “softer” female body. She “hardens”, if you will as she’s preparing for a fight, and relaxes into a “softer” shape when combat isn’t imminent.
I just kinda explain it away as one of the quirky ways the “curse” works on her.
Well, her having the hand around the sword is ok, as it is a special magical sword. But the way the shadow of the blade falls on the hilt, combined with the way the upper side of the blade is highlighted instead of just the edge, also strengthens the optical illusion of the blade being crafted by Escher.
Now, this is not something that bothers me. It is merely something I point out so that if it was unintended, the artist can, if he wishes, avoid in the future.
And it is a clear case of thoose who can, do, while those who can’t, try to come up with constructive critique on the web. As while I could try to draw this page, the result would be far far worse than what the artist produced.
Just noticed Tiff used both hands in the first panel, then seems to have picked up the sword to take her shirt off, talk about showing off your skills with a blade.
You can spot-work to build muscle, but fat is lost from the body as a whole. It’s really hard to have a ripped six-pack like that (with such low body fat) and also to have breasts unless you’ve had them surgically altered… or you have a magic curse altering your body physique.
Several comments on this, first, swords are never razor sharp. They use the force behind them to do the cutting, not the sharpness of the blade. A razor sharp blade would get damaged way to easily hitting armor or even bone.
Second, to Aclys , any DM that would do that to you is just being a a!s 😛
And last, this curse is starting to remind me of the power of the Hulk and She Hulk. Both of them are as strong as they need to be. There is no end to how powerful they can be it just depends on the situation. Perhaps the curse makes Tiff as powerful as she needs to be to overcome her foe as long as she believes she can? So she becomes more muscular the harder the fight. that would become very interesting if she ever comes up against a extremely powerful foe.
@Uhl
Swords aren’t made razor-sharp. Although they do taper out from the centre of the blade, the edge itself can be ground at a 45-90 degree angle. So it’s quite easy to wrap your hand around the blade of a sword without cutting yourself. They cut because of the force of being swung at something, not just from the edge itself. If they were razor-thin at the edge, they would become blunt very quickly because the edge couldn’t stand up to hitting anything hard (like metal armor for instance, or even bone).
@Uhl @AshenArtifice Also NorthWind will not cut its wielder. But it also depends on the blade AshenArtifice, Some are sharpened to clean edge like a katana or sushi blade for clean cut(crappy to perry destroys the blade edge, rolling it) ,ending the grinding with a strap or paper,a modern borosilicate glass rod knife sharpener is best for this (that will take a finger off.) or Micro Ground (micro teeth pattern) better for cutting but requires movement and pressure and not as clean cut, like you describe, you use Teethed Diamond rod for that or a 4000 grain stone with oil. And can be used to perry just fine. There were Exceptions a Kilij would Probably take your finger off just fine with smallest mistake and were sharper than a katana even with a micro teeth edge.
Swords don’t have to be RAZOR sharp to cut your fingers when you rub them on the edge like Tiff is showing here. Gently touching the blade of a normal sword won’t cut you, but rubbing the blade will, even if it’s an abrasion cut. (Ie, it rips the skin off by friction from lots of little metal snags.) Swords that see plenty of use, but are not polished frequently do have lots of “scars” along the edge that will rip skin.
@Uhl agreed worse is the infection risk. But I do rub my hand on blade to test sharpness by the sound and Tiff might be doing the same thing but instead going for intimidation value and North Winds Magic specifically not to cut in anyway that will harm the wielder. So its ok.
Long swords tend to have a gradual edge, namely the top 1/2 to 2/3 being the sharpest and used for cutting, the lower portion is used for blocking. Interestingly enough the only time a razor sharp edge is used on a sword is when the sword is used for demonstration purposes, IE skillfully cutting soft targets, because hitting bone or anything hard will damage the blade at an accelerated rate.
Even more interesting, there is a move with a longsword that involves the swordsman grabbing the blade and hitting the opponent on the head with the guard of the sword. I read about this move in a book on sword fighting, therefore I do not know how viable it is in combat.
Bonk the target on the head with the flat of the blade or the pommel instead. Grabbing the business end of the sword with hands seems silly, even with gauntlets on your hands.
Sorry, but any female who has more muscles and testosterone then the average male isn’t attractive to me. I’d rather jack off to a rock next to the river.
Be a Producer!Your name/title with an optional SFW hyperlink will be posted prominently HERE following the close of the month! You’ll also receive monthly mailings from Exiern’s author, Scott T. Hicken!
I believe he was counting on her not striping down for this, or at least delay it longer. Question is why?
Damn, Typhan-Knee has an impressive six pack. I love it when they remember she’s muscular.
Come on Tiff, kick his a!s, from the north, all the way down to the south.
Burrrrnnnnn!
EPIC BURN!
Penis! The ultimate defence!
Did Tiff just get more manly/muscular looking again? She was so soft looking in the bathing scene not that long ago… now she’s all hard-angles? Unconscious morphing and changes?
WELL … I was wrong again. GOOD!!!
Get Him, Typhan-Knee. And Then Become The Ruler Of This Clan.
At Least Make It Look Like You Are Going To Be … Then Hand It Off To Someone.

“Put down the sword first then the drool… umm, duel shall commence!”
Lower your weapon!
Gruhl: it looks that way, but no, her left hand is on the flat of the blade with her fingers lightly curling over the edge

oh wow, that is TOTALLY quotable dialogue worthy!!!
Well, in his defense, it is very difficult for a man to stand anywhere that is not behind his penis, in some measure.
@Uhl a razor sharp blade is exactly what you don’t want. You want the blade to survive impacts, no?
Personally, I’d prefer it if Shipeng would be consistent and drew Tiff’s body masculine all the time….

Well thanks to the Nature of her Curse If she decides Women are as every bit as powerful as men she will be..
I’m noting the expressions on the men in the bottom panel. I’d expect to see more “leer” and less “fear”. I wonder if they know something she doesn’t.
To people obsessing over the tough woman physique, who haven’t been reading The Dreadful:
Hello.
http://www.nuklearpower.com/2012/09/10/the-dreadful-152/
Yes, Jo… Only a woman could know this…
Then again, maybe I do have to take your word for it. As a man, I’ve had no trouble taking off a spit-upped shirt while holding a wriggling baby.
Minor shapeshifting for Tiffany is right in line with the tone of this series.
Also, Tiffany’s line: sick burn!
Just noticed Tiff used both hands in the first panel, then seems to have picked up the sword to take her shirt off, talk about showing off your skills with a blade.
Seriously, is the sword meant to be able to bend like that while looking perfectly straight (from this angle)?
…or is it just artist being derpyeyed?
Well said, Tiffany. ^_^

Ragingagnostic, I interpreted the expression on the guy on the left of the comic (our perspective) as “Oh, no, she’s going to die.”
… That is an epic frame TYphan-Knee has.

She should have included thwe word “dead” or “tiny”.

For those not observant (ie, the fast majority): Tiff’s left palm is on the top of the blade, with the fingers gently/lightly curled over the edge
The only ‘rubbing’ involved is from the viewers

You realize her Brother might sent everyone away so they would not ogle his Sister.
I REALLY like this one!!!
