More scary masks, that bodes that does. Boding of bodiness!
I’m still trying to work out the geography around that castle. The citadel standing on its own just doesn’t seem to sit with what we’ve seen (or with how castles generally ended up sitting in real life, curse you Tony Robinson and Time Team for filling my head with knowledge). There should be a lot of assorted stuff sitting around even the outer wall, and where is the town we saw during Peonie’s homecoming? Maybe the castle is up above the town, and it is just out of shot, but even then there should be a lot more signs of activity and…..I’m overthinking this aren’t I?
It’s looking good though, is the wind from the north going to be someone from Typhon-Knee’s past? If so, given what she has said about Northern Culture, what will they think of the very female Tiffany. Will they be as horrible as it would seem on the face of it, or has Tiff been over-egging the primacy on maleness in Northern Culture? Lets face it, it’d be even more funny (and slightly karmic) if Northern Culture wasn’t quite as misogynistic as Tifff made out, and it was just Tiff being a massive a!!!!!e.
Well, there’s VERY good reasons why primitive societies do NOT let women hunt or go to war which have nothing to do with mysogynism.
1.) Women give birth, and have to feed the babies. DUH. If they fall in battle or are killed by wild beasts, the very young children could starve to death, and there goes the bloodline.
2.) Rival tribes COULD consider women “trophies,” for reason #1. Makes sense to keep them somewhere easily defended as opposed to wandering about in the forest. See Peoinie.
3.) Women generally have lower upper body strength than men. Note: Until Typh adjusted to the “new body,” she was having problems dealing with opponents HE used to be able to beat easily.
4.) Generally, women don’t have as much inherent physical aggression as men (there are exceptions, of course.)
Also, if it’s autumn, shouldn’t some of the trees in panel 1 be changing color? I didn’t think the castle was that far north. Or maybe trees don’t do that in this universe?
@Azure Women also produce about 80% of the food in a hunter/gatherer society. The roles and interactions are less easily defined than you might think. In many of these societies the role isn’t always gender specific. A “Man” is defined by the role in these tribes, and it’s possible for a female to go through all the rituals a male does. From that point forward they are considered a “Man” and treated as such. Same goes for women. There are recorded instances, in the Sioux nation for example, of explorers pointing to obvious males and asking what they were called. The answer was always the Sioux word for female. In the most technologically primitive societies the role someone plays always trumps the gender of their birth. <– Anthropology Major 🙂
@Doc Savage, I always thought men went hunting because the women kicked them out of the camp to go do something useful and not be underfoot and getting in the way, preventing work getting done, by loafing about the whole damn day and generally mucking things up. A tradition that persists even to this day. 🙂
I almost have to bet a women in tiff socity has to be strong. Since they are left with the childern and made eldery if they live that long. Which mean they defend the village.
I am willing to bet tiff is over selling the uselessness of women. I am almost sure it her father who poluted such a view.

Like the old wall plaque saying goes: “When the white man came, women did all the work. Men got to hunt, fish and hang around all day. White man thought he could improve on a system like that.” ^_~
On women gathering 80% of food I disagree, depends on society and amount of war. Yes there may be a few extreme examples like that, but there are also extreme examples the other way where the men get 80% of the food, and women are busy with other stuff like processing the furs into clothing.
Both sexes tended to work long hours in average hunter/gatherer society.
Also on the geography of that castle, we really need a dramatic scene on that floating bridge that connects the turret on the right into the main complex. It’s just crying out for a big set-piece.
@CrypticMirror – I just figured that was Peonie’s room. You know, the one the King tries to keep her in, with only one way in and out. Usually involving lots and lots of injuries.
@ David
Sorry to disagree, but studies in modern H&G societies show that they worked a LOT less than the farming cultures that replaced them. One estimate is 10-14 hours a week, though I personally think that’s too low, It’s generally believed that the only reason we ever shifted to agriculture, all over the world at about the same time go figure, is to avoid the necessity of population control. Ironic don’t you think?

A study on people in extremely warm climates with low population density and little war does not show in my opinion what happens in world like extern. People in Brazil do not need to make much clothing or shelter. They do not have a harsh winter season.
Barbarians like the northerners in this story, and germanic tribes had to work much harder to find food, make *good* clothing and better shelter, including preserving food during winter times. Iron type weapons, armor, etc involve lots of work.
Hippies in 1960s tried to play primitive and found out that they had to work long hours.
*We* can play hunter/gatherer today. It is not easy in northern climate. Food is plenty in summer, people throw out their apples from trees, a person can simply go through back alleys to gather up food.
lots of wood can be gathered.
Especially those who are native indians can easily find land to live on, I personally can find if i wanted an open field that I would have permission to be at till land gets developed years later. Do you think native indians in our northern climate can survive on 14 hours a week without any government handouts if they actually tried? (They do not face war, etc, while for “norther barbarians” war was very common)
(PS: If you do have a way to survive up here in north where I live on 20 hours a day as hunter/gatherer I am interested. I am doing experiments, including raising rabbits, sheep, etc on how to be completely self sufficient if required.)
Hi, first comment – love the comic. Great story and excellent artwork – Well done! I just thought I’d comment on the storyline and where I think it would be great to explore..
Maybe have Typh fall completely into his/the Kings idea of women, and allow/make Peonie the hero that has to come save the damsel in distress (Typh) from her own mind? I think it would be a nice turn around on what seems the main arch so far – plus lets you explore options with other characters if you wanted to shift focus away from Typh — (let her play Queen a little while why you go elsewhere with the story?)..

OLD GRANDAD MACKENZIE RETURNS!
His poor grandaughter is going to be ashamed again 🙁
The Fractured seemed to have somewhat robotic bodies as well, so I’d say these are normal people wearning masks for who-knows-what reason.

My 2c, keep up the good work.
@Doc Savage: When you say “There are recorded instances of X” it strongly implies that X is not typical.
