Exiern Author Update
As some of you may already be aware of – because of the many emails I have been writing over the last 24 hours – there has been movement regarding who the next Exiern author will be.
Specifically, we’ve chosen one. As of right now everyone who applied has been sent an email thanking them for their submission, with a little note from me. Every submission had great material in it, clearly submitted by people who are passionate about this comic. Rejecting any of you was not easy, and writing those emails did not make my day go any better. Every one of you submitted something worthy of my time and I hope I was able to highlight that in my emails to you.
If, for any reason, one of my emails failed to reach its destination I’m sorry this was how the message was broken to you. Please let me know if you did not get a response from me.
I’m sure many of you are wondering who we’ve chosen, but that is an announcement I want to save for another day, once Drowemos has had the chance to begin working on the transition with the selected (and accepted) applicant.
More-so, at this time I want to acknowledge everyone who submitted. Thank you for your energy, interest, and passion for EXIERN. It is this comic’s amazing audience, whether you submitted material or have been willing to weather changes in the creative team, that keeps it going. I fully believe we will continue to write a series worthy of your readership…and I hope you will think so as well.
And don’t worry, more updates will come.
To the new author: Just remember one thing–
(1a) Tiffany, Peonie, and Teresa (nearly) naked draws eyeballs to the site.
(1b) Tiffany, Peonie, and Teresa fully dressed? Not so many eyeballs.
Don’t think I’ve gotten an email yet. Oh well, if I was one of the rejected, then I wish the chosen writer all the best.
Hi David, sorry if an email didn’t reach you…if you email me at Dan@exiern(dot)com I can try and find out what happened.
With all the changes in writers and artists, and even producers, in regular published comics, this shouldn’t come as such a great shock when things need to change.
So, wait, is Drowemos quitting, or was he never a author? what is going on, exactly, who is leaving, and why?
Drowemos is moving on from writing Exiern. He sold the comic to me a few months ago and we put up auditions for a new writer, which we’ve finally made a decision on. He came to me regarding his desire to work on other things. You’ll just have to stay tuned for the rest.
Wow, I can’t tell if that’s a complete dick move, or actually quite considerate. Yea, he’s quitting, but at least the villain from the beginning was (sort of) defeated. It would explain why everything has been so strange. I’m not sure if I want to stick around however for this comic if the nonsensical absurdity we’ve seen as of late will be the norm.
BTW, I like characters with story, and all this pointless nudity and really creepy fetish stuff is extremely off putting.
Then you’ll probably enjoy what’s in the works.
Yes, when the comic becomes nothing more than a girl on girl semi-porn comic (more than it already has) then we’ll know the two to put the blame on. After all this is the reason they probably picked the new writer from what I can tell of Dan’s other ‘works’. Thumbs up for Phildog.
I actually don’t have any creative input on the comic, I just run the books (as an author myself I hate editorial meddling). Based on people’s concerns I think you’ll actually be very happy with who we’ve chosen and their plans.
Darn. So much for having a topic tonight for a review. Oh well, I’m sure I can find something else to review. ^^;;
I really have a hard time believing you when the link to your site looks like some kind of low-rent 3D transformation porn comic. Just look at it. It looks like you threw some cheap clothes on a poser model, and then added the text in MS Paint. Not even gonna touch the website.
Anyway, they’re is a reason we’re concerned. Many comic book writers are sophomoric and sexist, and they don’t give a s!!t about the quality of their writing as long as there is “B00BIES”. Ugh. Exern was more than that, it had heart and intelligence. Now it’s just become f!!!!!g stupid. For example, you’re trying to mind-break the protagonist. We love the comic duality of a sexist Barbadian warrior trapped in bimbo’s body. The second you take that away from him, you leave nothing but a unappealing shallow archetype void of any type of real character and you’ve lost sight of both the audience and the joke. Subversion is what makes for great stories and comedy, it’s also what made this comic great.
Make sure the new writer understand this, because failure of new writer’s to understand the fundamentals of the subject mater they’re working with, and how it all works. I can understand as a writer you don’t want to interfere with another writer’s work, but what do you think your job as an editor is? When you’re handling properties in a business, you need to make sure they’re handled well when you assign who will be the stewards of them. The more you allow a writer or any artist for that mater to put of themselves into their work, they will, however, this will often cause the introduction of elements that cause it to lack mass market appeal.
I’m not sure if you’re familiar with Extra Credits. It’s a web series that talks about the various issues related to gaming, on an intellectual basis. Quite engaging. They recently posted a video about being a production manager, and a lot of what they had to say I agree with. I’d suggest you watch it. http://penny-arcade.com/patv/episode/so-you-want-to-be-a-producer
I’m very excited that, as changes roll along, it will become clear how much we agree on. 🙂
Also, that ad WAS created pretty much exactly how you described. If quality art is what you want stay as far away from my website as you can! But that’s about as much bleed-through between the two websites that I’ll allow (my mother reads Exiern). My goal has always been to retain Exiern’s integrity, and mixing with my own material will not help that goal. This is one reason why I turned down the chance to write it myself. I hope next week we’re able to begin casting more light on what I mean.
I trust Dan, I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt that things will continue along just as they have been. For all we know, the new writer could be just as big a fan as the rest of us and will do the story justice. We just have to give him/her a chance first. Besides, at the very least Exiern can still be free to read (if you don’t go to the member’s area), so you could monitor the change until you’re comfortable again to get a membership.
On some levels, Typh-anee acting like a man with t!!s (that she actually is) was a little annoying, if only because I’ve seen it so many times at tabletop RPG’s, sincerely meant to represent female characters. Imagine original Typh weilding a bullwhip instead of a sword, and you’ll have the only character a (male, naturally) gamer in my area would want to create…cringeworthy. Seeing Typh get girlified has been even more annoying, and the current plot threads are getting tangled enough to approach WTF levels. Our Big Bad’s resurrection scheme, involving the Hand of Vecna, er, you know what I mean, now seems to have been hijacked by some other Big Bad, and that subplot is now reaching WTF levels too. Cheesecake, with occasional newdity for the premium crowd (y’all gotta make a living from this somehow) is fine, but if that becomes the be-all and end-all it will get boring. Fast. Don’t forget there are (usually) brains attached to eyeballs, not just stiff peckers. Are dicks worth cultivating, at the expense of brains? Well, that’s your call, but brains tend to make more money than dicks…
