Black Magic Woman
Sometimes I don’t like my business model. The current member’s comic is a prime example. I really hate locking it away in the members section. Not because it’s particularly amazing although the art by Javier García is top notch. But I do hate locking it away because of the name and premise.
The comic is a parody of Bewitch and I Dream of Jennie. You know the idea bored housewife with magic powers meddles in the affairs of her husband. And this being Exiern you can probably guess where the meddling is going to be heading. So again nothing to amazing
But the twist I kind of enjoy about is that I made the magic woman/traditional man paring an interracial couple and gave it the whole inappropriate name “Black Magic Woman”. The reason I like this is that it feel like a show that should have been made in the 1960s. Even the title feels right in it inappropriateness.
Heck Jennie of I Dream of Jennie technically was supposed to be Persian. How much more interesting would that show if Jennie was actually played by someone of Persian decent instead the Nordic Barbra Eden. Or at least I think it would have been interesting. Not that Barbra Eden is not hot, but I am sure there could have been an equally hot woman of appropriate ethnicity.
The point is these show were about difficulty of transitioning to a more equal society, accepting women’s power in the world and the changing societal landscape. The couples in these shows should have been interracial because in a way that is what the shows are about. It’s a show that should have been made but couldn’t have been made at the time.
Fortunately Hollywood has outgrown these biases. I mean look at how the found people of the right ethnicity for the air bender movie…
Oh right.
Honestly, I think that having the right ethnicity is something to be considered next to acting ability in some cases, and these days I think that if they get different ethnicities, their two notes are “acting ability” and “speaks fluent english”. I know that the last part does sound racist, but that’s only if you look at the surface of it, for Hollywood producers know that subtitles won’t work for the broader audience.
Besides, in the case of I Dream of Jenie, who says that the guy who found her was a huge racist and she took the form of a white woman because she’s a magical creature? Or even take a science approach and say that the time she spent in a bottle made her pale?
One, thanks for the sentiment and the shout-out against M. Night’s, Paramount’s, and the general movie industry’s idiocy (gotta make sure you aim at all responsible parties, not just the director!) I feel much the same.
@shiba_naganori
Technically, spending time away from the sun makes you pale, and turns your hair darker, so that doesn’t totally work, even if there *were* a science to genies..
@Except jeanies don’t work that way and it’s still just a poor excuse.
In their defense, I don’t think you CAN get the right ethnicity for an anime… not easily, anyway – most of the characters don’t generally look Japanese. 😛
And I really can’t imagine Jeanie as a Persian, but that’s just because…. well… she wasn’t one; I can’t imagine anyone BUT Jeanie as Jeanie.
@Dragon Writter:
It’s not an Anime(It’s a western show) and they were clearly asian and they show clearly used alot of asian culture. You have to be blind not know that they are ment to be asian.
Also, Jeanie the character was persian, the people on the show just didn’t have the the stones to cast an actual persian actress.
As for the business model/member’s area, there’s no way I could explain to my wife, the visa charge for a number of comics I’d like to support. If there was a physical tip jar I could put cash into, you’d get it.
So it’s not that I can’t afford to pay. I just can’t afford getting caught paying.
You could donate to Knit Princess (knitprincess.com) they are all part of the same “company” so a donation there supports this comic as well and vice versa. Can see your wife objecting to a knitting comic.
