By this point in the comic, a couple key events have happened that aren’t shown in this drawing style, but in Drow’s style, which isn’t quite as good. You’d have to read the Classic version to make some sense of it.
Basically, back in Faden’s castle, Asylum, Tiffany and Peonie were wondering what they were going to do with Faden, since Tiffany had managed to capture him alive.
As Tiffany let Peonie free, the unicorn went over to Faden and tapped him with its horn – magical effects happen, and both humans wonder what the hell just happened.
Peonie goes to check the books to see if she can figure something out, and she happens on Faden’s enchanted tome – it responds to the voice or will of the reader and flips the page to magically tell the solution. It turns out that the unicorn’s horn can seal dark powers until the next lunar cycle. The book turns out to be a bit of an a!s, though, and lips off the two.
Next is the journey to Redberd, the town they’re in right now. Tiffany keeps getting sick of Faden and ties him up/gags him/etc. constantly, only to find that he gets free far too often. With no tomes and no powers, she wonders how he could possibly do it. Peonie suggests that maybe he comes from some country or another which is famous for its contortionists. Tiffany discards the comment – she knows how to tie a rope to make sure somebody doesn’t get out of it – but the country’s name reminds her of something else.
The night Faden gives up on trying to control Tiffany, she reveals that she’s been waiting for him to try that for a week. She recognizes the mind control as something the country Peonie mentioned is slightly less well-known for, but something her barbarian clan has encountered. It’s hinted this is why she can resist the power, but not explained why.
Peonie checks the tome again, which is seen here.
The Classic comic ends with a subplot where Tiffany goes to pick up some euphrasia, which she remembers is quite effective against the mind control. Euphrasia has another effect – it’s useful for pregnant women, and the lady who they buy it from spends the entire time insisting that Tiffany is pregnant.
It looks like a few Classic comics were posted on the main Exiern instead of newly-drawn ones, but that they’ve since been pulled, though not replaced. The unicorn and power sealing, the tome, the mind control’s origins and the euphrasia are missing here, which can be slightly confusing to someone who’s just read through the archives with the feeling that they’re missing a few plot points.
Tiffany didn’t appear to be worried that Faden would be able to mind control the guards so quickly, just that he would trick them into letting him out. It’s why she wasn’t very prepared for what happened when she reached the prison the second time.
Having just discovered this comic earlier this week (thank you, TVTropes!) I’ve defnitely noticed that, especially as I read through the early strips, there’s something of a shakeup in the narrative flow. I was wondering if there were some strips missing, and now I’m wondering if there’s any way to read the one’s that ARE.
It’s possibly in the store or maybe the new Authors don’t want it mixing up the more recent streamlined story material.
That post explains most of it. Except for a meeting with a bandit group that have a go at Tiff on the road despite the smarter bandit leader recommending against it. Then Tiff and Peonie later meet someone on the road who turn out to be cursed. The bandit group come in and save them, using some special substance which repairs an impaled Tiff. The cursed man is vanquished and Tiff begins making out with the bandit leader… Before waking up and screaming.
So yeah. Except for the initial bandit group meeting and defeat, it was all an unimportant dream and with the art upgrade the whole lot was dropped from the story. Drowemos was in charge then and I think he made the right call to first turn the bandit rescue scene into a dream sequence that never happened, then recon it all out completely.
The original art was all MSPaint quality. No great loss.
I think Doomsayer Mac’s intro was added later. The sequence to defeating Faden’s and exiting the castle is all mostly the same with a few unimportant pages removed (someone watching the battle with Faden thanks to a seer who was just perving on Peonie then Peonie actually using her cleavage to fool Faden’s guards).
Be a Producer! Your name/title with an optional SFW hyperlink will be posted prominently HERE following the close of the month! You’ll also receive monthly mailings from Exiern’s author, Scott T. Hicken!

And where can I find the classic version? Long time since that post, I just hope someone responds in a near future…

Yes, I’m told those pages were lost to a data failure long before I took over. I’ve not seen them myself.
@Scott: oh! I have a copy of them. I presume your E-mail is on here somewhere? I’ll find it and the images. Zip ’em up and send them on.
@Charles81 I’d like to see them too, if you could upload the zip to mediafire or something it would be great. 😛
